The first trip to China is a kind of haze

I had just started a new job as software manager... but that easter I took two weeks off to go to China to meet her. Unbelievable crowd scenes at the airport and then there she was with an amazing hairdo and incredible ignoring of how to hail a taxi, then a hair-raising taxi drive to the hotel. Totally forbidden for us to be in the same room but there we were. Next day probably by train to her home town, where there were guards posted outside to make sure of the laowai's safety, they knew I was there. A lunch when a beggar thrust a nail through his arm.
Later by bus to Huang Shan where the police also knew I had come; memorable place! I remember most the people in the trees in the morning crying 'the sun is coming' because having stayed on the mountain that night, we had got up at 5am to see it rise.

Not too clear on what happened next - I think Chengdu and Nanjing. Bus and Train. Basically I just did as I was told! That was ok... Nanjing was in many ways too short because she wasn't interested in the Japanese massacre while I wanted to see this history. One museum and the home of Zhou Enlai, but hotels were so expensive then and they were watching us carefully, very closely. Later in Hangzhou there were serious problems.
After a night in Hangzhou together, having two separate rooms, we were detained one morning. The reason was that we had been 'together'. 1997. HK year! After about 4 hours we were allowed to exit and take the train. It happened again on my second trip, after I had already married.
