Shampoo days

Sweetie (my dog) behaves like most cats do around water – she’d rather avoid getting wet. I thought that all dogs loved the water, some much more than others do, but even after our trips to the beach, and our many hot-water showers together (kills 2 birds grin), she’s still reluctant when I call her to the bathroom. Ironically, she freely goes into it on her own volition to find hidden treats (during treasure hunts), to ‘sniff out’ what’s for breakfast/dinner (I use the counter space for prepping those meals), and even to stare at me whilst I 'potty' laugh(if the curtain hasn’t been drawn).

So, shampoo days can be a little challenging sometimessigh. I make sure that the water isn’t too hot, I call to her with as sweet a tone as I could but still usually have to go get her, I sing to her whilst I’m washing her, I place her by a large open window as I towel her off and sometimes give her a treat/lunch (based on the time we get done). She’s more than 2 years old now, so I feel that she should have a more positive attitude towards shampoo days, but maybe she still needs more time.

Like her, there are some things in life that take me a longer-than-expected-time to get used to. For example, getting older. It amazes me that my way of thinking about life isn’t ‘ageing’ at the pace that my body is. I sometimes forget that I’m not as young as I once was. Not sure that I'll ever get used to that realitylaugh.

But, just as shampoo days are a necessary part of life, so are many other things that we may reluctantly have to get used to (but never enjoy), such as the already high but consistently rising cost of living, the ever present ‘mysteriously incurable’ diseases like Cancer and Covid and the war between Russia and the Ukraine. These are not things that we should want to get used to, but do we have a choice?blues

Didi, I am the oldest here but trust me the way you feel stays that way for most of us.
Only when I have to look in the mirror do I say oh yeah you are old.
Unusual your Sweetie does not like to get washed has she had shampoo in her eyes perhaps?
I know a lady when she takes a shower, her cat goes in the shower also. She told that the cat would not want to miss it.....................wave
Now that's a brave cat!laugh

As for Sweetie having had shampoo get into her eyes, I was wondering about it. I know that she has had water get into her ears... I should get her some ear plugs perhaps; see if that helps.

Thanks Jenny,teddybear
My uncle had a large Old English Sheepdog
that loved to dive from 3-4 meters up,
was an amazing sight.

Then I had a shar pei and he
would never get a paw wet if he could avoid it.

So it depends on the person. drinking
hmmm Is it the person (i.e. the pet's owner), or is it the breed? There are some breeds that take to water naturally, and would stay in it as long as you'd allow them to, but others that don't. So, it may be the breed, more than the owner.

Or maybe the dog's earliest experiences being in water were not good ones. That could be another reason.
My dog will take a swim in the pond on a freezing cold day, but heaven forbid if you get her feet wet with the garden hose. I believe it's all good when it's on their terms.

Used to have dogs that that do not want to stay out of the big basin of water. He simply loved the water. The problem was always when he wiggled after soaking and wanted to be comfy on the bed. Missing those days though.
Remedy: get yourself a puppy.grin
Hi Didi,

This touched me as I lost my pet dog a few years ago but she was groomed professionally due to a double coat but hated going there as she didn't like being parted from me. Miss her like crazy.crying

As for your other comments I really think people should worry less and live for the moment more. Age is just a number and we really do need to embrace every ray of light that filters through our existence and live for the moment.

For some life will be short unfortunately so accept what you have ,give what you can give and love like there is no tomorrow and not just men.grin
Really sorry for your loss, TMsad flower . Perhaps it's time to get another one? Or, perhaps you could volunteer to foster/dog-sit one? dunno

Good advice.thumbs up
My first dog (black Lab cross called Pi) loved a shampooing for the massage, but I had to buy him a waterproof coat because he was afraid of the rain.

When I first had him from the pound he was in the garden when it started pelting it down with rain and he screamed so loudly I thought the back door had slammed shutting him out. I ran like the wind such were his agonised cries, but it turned out he could come in - he just wasn't willing without saving his beloved toy coconut from drowning. The damn thing kept slipping out of his mouth once it was wet and the whole experience traumatised him. laugh

My last rescue dog (a huge Lurcher) was all for jumping into water, but his skinny legs and paws weren't effective paddles. Once I had to get in a swollen river up to my waist and hoik him out before he drowned. The primordial sludge in my walking boots and knickers was well worth the look of love and relief in his eyes when he saw me coming to get him.

You're right, some things we should never get used to, or be complacent about. dancing dog smitten

laugh Sounds like Sweetie...
His name was Pig, not Pi as I typo'd.

He was a hog of a dog.

And yes, he was a sweetie. I worshipped the ground he walked on.

I loved all four of my rescue dogs, but there's no one quite like your first dog/first love, is there? laugh
/\/\/\/\/\ That was me.
