A Smart gun

An American firm (Biofire) has developed a programmable 9mm double stack pistol that can only be fired by the specific person authorized to use it. It uses fingerprint reading and other technology so only the user the gun is programed for can turn the gun on. It will remain on and active as long as it is in that person's hand, but turn off and become inert as soon as the hand leaves it. Orders are being taken now but first deliveries will occur in early 2024. The advantage is a homeowner or other authorized user no longer has to keep the gun under lock and key as it will not work for unauthorized persons. This makes it child safe while also preventing someone who overpowers an authorized user from shooting them with their own gun (something that sadly happens now and then). Many crimes are committed with stolen guns. Stealing this kind will not help a criminal if he is not the authorized user. If you are the owner, it works for you. If you are not, it won't. Guns were always smart, just that some people that got their hands on them are not, So people from now on you see someone with a gun & a finger necklace you know the gun is stolen, or you buy a gun with finger taped to the trigger walk away,,, & now every member of some household will need their own personal gun for protection, in case Mommy & Daddy is gone to work i guess, I wonder whats next? a gun that will only shoot at bad guys lol

I very much doubt that this statement will be found to be true. Hackers can pretty much hack anything, and they will find a way, including physically over-riding the mechanism. I would even predict another company providing such a "kit" in the near future.

Stay safe and teach gun safety, and treat all guns as being loaded and the safety off. And remember, all software has bugs. Never purchase a gun that operates via software.

Yes certainly if one uses an Eprom writer )which costs more than the gun) one can reprogram the Eprom or substiture their own Rom chips. Having built several perfectly working pistols myself from billets of metal using machinist drawings abd aksi 3D plastic printed Glock-ish frames via 3D CAD printer programs I would suspect that is easier than trying to reprogram one of these guns. The point is if your 3 year old grabs it, it will not go off. Likewise if the burglar or robber gets it out of your hand, it will not go off. I concur that if someone with the equipment to reprogram it or install new chips gets it, of course they can get it to work, but it would be easier to just make a gun from scratch.

The US State pf New Jersey passed a law a few years back that once a smart pistol entered the market and is commercially available, within one year in that state all new guns sold must use that technology. Yes, older used guns will rise in value for some, but the odds are excellent that those with small children, police officers and some folks that live alone will begin switching to these just to reduce the odds of something bad happening.
