curious trend in British politics - Lib Dems and N
A former schoolmate of Nick Clegg, whom the politician accused of making anti-German remarks during an exchange trip, has rejected the claim, pointing out that he is half German.
The Liberal Democrat leader said the boy, whom he named as Adrian, shouted as the group travelled through Germany in 1983: “We own your country, we won the war.”
Mr Kendall said: “I remember the exchange trip well. I was the only Adrian on the trip, but I most certainly would never have made a remark like that about the Germans.
He said this was an example of Britain’s warped obsession with the Second World War and the delusions of grandeur in the national psyche.
He wrote: “All nations have a cross to bear, and none more so than Germany with its memories of Nazism. But the British cross is more insidious still.
“A misplaced sense of superiority, sustained by delusions of grandeur and a tenacious obsession with the last war, is much harder to shake off.”
