Lets not forget the meaning of Memorial Day

Yes, you get a long weekend...yes you can enjoy the beach, the BBQ's, picnics with family, vacations out of town.

But let us not forget the true meaning of Memorial Day....

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service.

Every year I ride out to the Veterans Park and place some flags down in honor of the soliders who have fallen in service.

Here is a picture from today.....one flag for each soldier lost.

Please dont forget the true intent of the day, as you go about your activities. cheers

Good point.

Most of us know what Memorial Day is commemorating, but still view it as a day of vacation and "good times"....a party day if you will.

Kind of strange...to "celebrate" the passing of heroic young men who put their lives on the line and died for our great country.
Very good post Drea, though for the UK it is the 70th Anniversary of the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk in 1940, where over 100 small boats were used to save 338'000 lives were saved, French & British... I salute them all head banger For more details see: thumbs up
Hi Miss Calm! hug

Yes, I think it is sad how many of our 'holidays' and traditions get lost in "having a day off"

I often wonder how even Christmas became so commercialized....(besides the obvious-money) but many times people forget the true intent behind these days....and while they are out at the beach, or getting drunk.....the families who cannot do those things with their loved ones....who were lost in the war. moping
Mr. Yash-

Hi Billyfatwas , hope your fine and everyone else in this blog ..

You mentioned Anzio etc .

An anti war song {although like most wars i think they have to be fought sometimes}

The WHOLE! ! ! lyrics of Waltzing Matilda is a very moving picture of War and its consequences ,

Its a pity that some only know its chorus and not the whole song and its meaning ...

handshake to everyone
Hi Jon and Billy! wave

Yes, I think it is important to pay respects to our individual nations.....no matter what country it is, there were always those who came before to make our countries the places hey are today wine cheers

CHEERS TO THE WORLD! grin
Hi John:

The song you are referring to is called And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda written by Eric Bogle in 1971. Very moving.

My favourite version was recorded by the Bushwackers 5 years later.

cheers
BILLYFATWAS Thanks for that , will look on u tube to see who you mentioned ,,all the bestcheers
I would agree with anything Drea111 said.love But I would agree with with what she said if anyone else had said it too.
A big nation is a nation that give respect to all the people that have fought and sacrifice them self for the sake of the nations goals. Not just war heroes but the social workers, fire men, teachers etc maybe others could add more noble profession. . God bless
With all due respect, I don't think we can compare the sacrifices that veterans have made to that of teachers and social workers. I don't have first had experience, but it's been well documented on film and in literature, the nearly unimaginable pain of war.
