Scents and the Memory

There are a few scents that trigger strong, specific memories for me.......sometimes it can feel I am transported back in time, to that place when the scent had a meaning, and for a minute in bliss.

I recently bought some coconut room spray, and it smells exactly like my brothers car air freshner he used when I was 16.....it took me back to the friends and memories I had in that car, and for a minute I was 16 again.....

Cinnamon is another scent that will always conjure up memories for me....of my grandmother.....everytime I smell it I am transported back to being a child....eating cornmeal at my grandmothers table, in the small china bowls I loved so much....sprinkled with cinnamon....I can hear her laughing when I smell cinnamon...

Lilacs take me back to a magical time of youth also, picking the lilacs off of the trees in my parents backyard, and the sweet smell they spread around the house, when the wind would blow......

The smell of rain is another I will never forget, and will always bring a smile to my face.....

These are just a few of the scents that trigger very strong memories for me...so that got me thinking about memories and how our minds store them as information, and how we recall specific memories based solely off of scent....and how our experiences can shape a positive or negative memory and attach it to a time, a place, or a scent......

cheers

10k...did you lose your sense of smell? I once met a guy who had no sense of smell....so I wondered how that would affect his memories...he said that his other senses were heightened....claimed he had 'superman' hearing.....handshake

Can't say a particular smell actually reminds me of anything....... but some smells will trigger off some feeling of deja vu every now and then.

Only last week I was in a shop when I passed a bloke with a bad case of BO. Without laying eyes on him I knew who it was. Hadn't seen him in 15 years.
rolling on the floor laughing billy you cracked me up with that.....you recall a specific BO from 15 years prior? wow you must definetely have a heightened sense of smel! laugh
i have to admit .... bogs are way more fun with some fightin and heavy discussion ....

i think for me the smell that triggers the happiest memories is woodsmoke, it reminds me of campfires in the valleys as children, when we camped out, in the foothills of the ' Comeragh Montains ' in County Waterford, in the south of Ireland, sitting around making tea, and cooking sausages, the freedom we had then, is alien to children today for the most part, sometimes when driving, a waft of woodsmoke will drift into the car, triggering memories of those happy, carefree, childhood days, thanks drea, for the time capsule.
for me its the smell of laundry ...

when mother changed the bed sheets .. she used to pile 'em all up on the floor in the laundry room ...

That made an excellent cloth-pool for me to swim in ....

That would have remaind a sweet childhood memory if I were to never realise what bed-sheets might be subjected to ..

Hi 10k,,,now there,s a thought,,,,blushing oh,the scent of living next to Billybanana applause
Yes it's amazing how that works! I was working with some cleaning solutions and found a container of chlorine that was unidentified. I opened the cap and took a smell, it was strong and the odor was stuck in my nose for hours. It kept reminding me of when I used to hang-out at the local swimming pool and memories just rushed through my head for hours. thumbs up handshake bouquet
I use to live very close to a glue factory. I forget what it smelled like. This is a great blog on marriage and divorce by the way.
I had a fantastic grilled cheese sandwich for dinner.
scents and memories...very interesting...I wonder what it means if you don't recall the smell of money? conversing
No need to worry about the frogs over here at my place. A thirteen year old girl set me strait when she said, hey look, did you see that frog just ate that fly? The frogs are on the windows at night because the light attracts the bugs that the frogs likes to eat. See you have nothing to fear over here! Makes me wounder if the frog is smarter then the person who wrote that book you read.beer
I don't think Al Pacino said that in the movie "Scent of a Woman" confused
