Two quotes, which one do you agree with?

"The art of policing is, in order not to punish often, to punish severely." Napoleon

"They will permit me to walk into the gas chamber and, paradoxically, die calmly. For i have learned the hard, the lethal way to put them to work.
I earnestly submit my society can learn to reach those thousands of youngsters following in my footsteps to do the same in a much easier way, provided only if it is willing to call upon its reason and its humanity rather than its executioners and its desire to punish, punish, punish." Caryl Chessman

Is the loss of liberty punishment enough?
To punish or to reason with and attempt to change?

These questions and the answers to them seem to change with newly elected goverments, or whichever one is popular with the public, its media or psychologists of the day. The result seems to be no real direction or conviction to really sorting out which approach is correct, effective and to the benefit of society in the long term.

The honest answer is it means ticking off more crimes as solved, saves money and time. It is in truth all about saving money and achieving targets set out by the government. As for the justice, if he/she has committed ten burglaries the reality is that if he/she admits to all of them in court the time served in reality is the same as committing two burglaries. In effect only two out of the ten victims recieve justice. The prisoner has got a result, the police can claim a higher percentage of crimes solved and the government are happy that targets are being achieved as this information can then be passed onto the media and public.
Erm,,, I think were missing something here,

Does not the punishment go someway towards compensation of the victim?????

so crime does pay, the more you do the better!!!!

crazy society, you can be put in jail for bouncing a cheque in France, it just don't happen
The answer i think is:

Make prison a punishment and a deterant. You do this by removing the three gym sessions they have daily, the free education and open university courses available to them. Take away the x boxes from the cells and the pool tables from the wings. And actually make them spend a little more time in there cells. I could go on, IT courses, music lessons etc but i think you get the point.

Make sure the sentences are correct for the crime committed.

Not saying that this will solve everything but it would be a start. Don't believe in the death penalty, mistakes are made and do not believe one man has the right to take another mans life. But for certain crimes life should mean life. Think of all the terrible crimes in the last twenty years, now consider the fact that there are less than fifty "full lifers" in the system.
