The individual's commanding officer decides what level of military discipline will be applied, starting with non-judicial punishment, which can be informal at company level and has no permanent record, or Article 15 proceedings, which are made part of the permanent record. Article 15 punishment can include extra duty, fines, restrictions, or demotion. The next level is courts martial, which can be either summary or general.
