One idea would be to find an nice antique that would have been around back in your fathers day. Something he would know of or probably once had himself.
Thats a neat idea! Thats a definate place to start. Thank u!!!
What did he do for a living? If you found something that was related, that would have more meaning for him. I seen my father more interested in some old trinket from yesteryear than say a computer or some other modern toy.
give him a ring on the phone and ask him wave
He was a Navy Commander! And I do ask and he always says the samething socks and handcerchiefs!!! He has enough of both. Ive done the memory boxes and the refinishing old photos and such Im just stuck!
I am willing to bet he would instantly recognize this :)

This particular one is from 1942 and was used by the navy.

then bring food and plenty of it so he dosent have buy any for a while

Organize a small party for him..
Make all the cooking of his favourite food, drinks , cakes, etc...
(In case you don't cook... order from a cattering unusual kind of food...!! Something unusual but tasty)

Invite all his close friends to this party secretly (to make him a surprise)...

And after the surprise.. just leave the house(in case you are living together).. and let him enjoy the party with his close friends...

Throw him a special suprise party with all his old work mates. He would love that.Ring up the Navy and ask them for memoribilla from the Navy. They are sure to give you something.

Buy him a Boat, thoses little ones in the glass bottle. That would be cute.Good luck and happy birthday to your great Dad.yay
If you can afford it a Cruise would be lovely and you can relax and spend quality time with him. You are sooooo lucky to have a great Dad. I was orphaned as a baby so didn't get to share wonderful times with my dad or mum. If you can't afford to go on a Cruise how about something simple like the two of you going to a fave sports day or just fishing together. Something blokey. cheers hug happy birthday for your dad
The best thing to give him is you. Cos he loves you. Go and give him a big tight hug. Tell him that you love him. Spend some good time with him. Drag him out, get in the car and go somewhere with him. Give him your 100% attention. Nothing beats that.
I like max's ide the best.
I was thinking maybe writing him a song and sing it to him.

But time, for instance just u and him outdoors somewhere would be good u know. And dont forget the hug hug
Most past military honors like medals or comandations end up in a box and never seen afterward. Actually they are very important evidence of his honorable service to his country. You could have a frame shop create a shadow box with a blue felt background to display the materials. He may like that. It also shows you honor his personal sacrifice being away from his family during that period. handshake
Any of the ideas here are great. You can even put them together, a nice party, the right gift, and lots of friends and family around.
You all have great ideas! I think I am going to use an idea from each of u!! Thank u all so much. He deserves something fantastic he is an incredible man and done some incredible things but most off all hes an awesome dad!!! Thanks everyone Ill let u know what happens!!!
This will take some effort and work on your part, but make him a plaque with 79 reasons on it why he is the greatest dad in the world to you...... be creative and do it yourself...
Give him a grandchild if he doesn"t have one !! Nothin like kids to make you feel young or kill you before it"s time !! heart beating teddybear
Just take him to a quiet place just for both of you, tell him to tell you about is young days and get him lovely gifts. He we be so happy because they love talking about their young days.
For my moms 70th birthday, My 2 sisters and I bought 70 birthday cards and had complete strangers sign them (we filled out the envelope and attached the stamp) It was awesome to watch her face on her birthday opening 70 cards from people she did not know!!!!!

@Jenn: Just to have all of the people that love him attend the celebration would mean the world to him, I thinkcheering
