common sense

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:-Knowing when to come in out of the rain; - Why the early bird gets the worm;- Life isn't always fair; - And maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies, don't spend more than you can earn and adults, not children, are in charge. His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with s*xual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife Discretion, his daughter Responsibility, and his son, Reason. He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights,I Want It Now,Someone Else Is To Blame,I'm A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

There was a time when Common Sense dictated that witches were burned at the stake, or drowned and other wrong doers were hung, drawn and quartered. There was also a time when it was OK for teachers to beat up pupils who were "unruly" (according to the teachers definition). It seems to me Common Sense that teachers should not be allowed to touch or otherwise have physcial contact with pupils, it also seems Common Sense to me that a "child" old enough to get pregnant does have some human rights. She is not the property of her parents.
Perhaps you should just not lament the passing of a few old cliches, which really dont mean much and move forward with the times.
Churches have ALWAYS been very profitable businesses.
Common sense suffered a massive coronary when mass media joined religious and/or political agendas using rare exceptions to prove there point and further there ideals. Common sense was given CPR in an atempt to revive it . This had worked in the past because this kind of " exception makes the rule " has been used to excite and influence the ignorant for centuries . What caused the failure to revive the patient was the large number of really stupid people who actually belive all the BS that gets slung today . . . doh
You know, these comments are truly reflective of our times and deteriorating intelligence. Self-responsibility and accountability will never be out of date. Common sense dictates that if you can't feed and clothe and pay for the education of a child, don't make one to dump on the rest of society to take care of. I am so weary of all of the stupid advice from people who advocate giving somebody a "free ride".
Your blog is right on the money. As a citizen of a country that is continually handing out tax-payers hard earned money to criminals, whether they are illegal aliens or other forms of crooks, I am sick of hearing about the violation of someone's civil rights. Civil rights mean that you have the right to live and be civil about it, or you don't have any right. That is what common sense is all about, period! The stupid and completely idiotic is quickly becoming the norm...
Right on, people! I've always operated on pure logic, like Star Trek. "Purely logical, Captain." Unfortunately, the rest of the world doesn't operate on logic. frustrated blues
