SQUANDERED

my love, you betrayed
i held you so softly yet you strayed
love, you were trecherous
were you of a union lecherous?
you died hour by hour
tho' you knew you were my honour
i was proud to bear your name
all i do now, is hang my head down in shame
i saw you gasp for breath
in agony, in the throes of death
once i had you all together
in freedom, not in a fetter
charmingly you deluded me
how can i, your memory set free ?
you wore passion like a crown
it burnt itself out, then did it drown
in other distractions you wandered
my treasure, gem after gem you squandered
i bled drop by drop helplessly
i saw your love fade haplessly
i was still comely, still fair
i wonder why you ceased to care
perhaps variety's thrill is your bend
i was a foolish victim to your trend
i never let myself think of you now
i had to learn to do that somehow
only, once in an age, it flashes
memories of my love turn into lashes
that leave welts upon my heart
once engraven thus on my heart
of it they become an integral part
i cry but no tears flow
only the pulse beats, but oh! so slow....
