Costa Concordia cruise liner disaster - New Eviden

the Concordia’s captain, Francesco Schettino, and first officer Ciro Ambrosio were detained last night at the police station in Porto Santo Stefano on the Italian mainland, as they faced continuing questioning about the events leading up to the disaster. Prosecutors are investigating possible charges of multiple manslaughter and abandoning the ship while passengers were still in danger.
Prosecutor Francesco Verusio said the Concordia had approached the tiny island of Giglio ‘the wrong way’, while sources said that the 52-year-old captain, from Naples, had abandoned the ship at around 11.30pm local time – about an hour after it struck a rocky outcrop and started taking in water – while the last passengers were not taken to safety until 3am yesterday morning.

sigh sigh conversing
I haven't followed this story closely, nor did I see Summer's blog. However, I saw headlines this morning, that the reason
the ship went off course, is so a steward could "wave to his family" doh
Sort of true Jim wave ~ according to my mate.....quote; "I am docked in St Thomas USVI at the moment, and one of the Carnival ships are behind us. Is the identical class ship to the Concordia."

" Captain "apparently" sailed close to shore to salute a sailor who was on shore. "
frustrated frustrated

I have a salute for the captain, but it only involves one finger, not the whole hand. very mad
~ To top it all, Capt and crew had abandoned ship, before passengers were rescued! Hence charges of Manslaughter! very mad very mad frustrated frustrated

The worst thing of all is that the Captain still continues saying he did abandon his vessel the last. He decided to change course and sail close by the island to honour one of his crew.
Oly- Carnival also owns Seaborn cruiselines, Holland America and Cunard cruise lines. I worked in the cruise industry in the nineties, and in those days safety rules and drills were very strict, and I cant imagine that it changed in general, but individual actions can be catastrophic too, specially if the individual is the ships commander.

I love cruises and feel very sad this has happened. Cruises have such a fantastic safety record last time a disaster on this scale was the Titanic R.I.P. sad flower and to the people who lost their lives in this modern day tragedy sad flower
