As a fan of Open Source and Free Software this is good news, because I believe that NVIDIA had too big marketshare.

AMD steps in
Yes, but in the technical world things can change fast. Windows is loosing users and who could have thought ten years ago that a search engine company (Google), would create an OS for smartphones (Android)?
well, I shy away from anything that has NVIDIA - simply because they have not been any cooperative with anything beside Microsoft - it seems.
Been happy with AMD and ATI - and it was a joy when my chipset was supported by xorg. But right now I am pretty tired of the GNOME 3 stupidity. Perhaps I am missing some vital insight as to how and why they came up with this.
I run Linux Mint 13 with MATE. You can read more about the Mate project here:
These are my favourite programs; Caja (fork of Nautilus), Pluma (fork of Gedit) and Atril (fork of Evince).
mange takk ! :)

so, someone did fork Gnome 2, hah - didn't know that. Guess Gnome 3 has tablets in mind ?
Yes, and I've read that the Gnome people and Ubuntu's Unity people will meet and discuss the road ahead.

But there's a big difference between using tablet and a pc. The behaviour isn't the same. Who wants to use and iPad or a tablet to write on? Then you need a keyboard, and why not directly buy a pc?

confused
well, I haven't really heard anyone say this. I heard some say the developers wanted something simpler then the old desktop, which doesn't make much sense to me. But - most free distribution take a lot of - not so good programs - almost forcing it on people. Then debug it and give feedback to developers. So, I thought it could make sense to come up with something that may run on tablets - as I don't consider the gnome community as dumb, - I am inclined to believe there is some well thought of idea behind it, else I don't see the justification for it. My hunch.
this is Mate, mate grin - been using some tweaked lxde for some time.
I tried to find the statement I wrote about before, but I can't find it now. I will continue searching...

Here is someone who doesn't like Windows 8, Gnome3 or Unity:
I think I might have NVIDIA on my desktop computer, Explorer 2007, Vista. Because the Office expired and I refused to buy it, I went to Open Office 3.4. Now I can see and work with any Microsoft file I want without paying a penny to Microsoft. Take that, Microsoft! banana
Huggerman4U, You should also try the forked version of OpenOffice, called LibreOffice:
Because since Oracle bought Sun (who developed OpenOffice from StarOffice), the development of OpenOffice is discontinued. Former members of OpenOffice started to work on LibreOffice, which is a fork of OpenOffice.

Then for a quick start of a word editing program, I will have to warmly advice AbiWord from Abisource.
