Inner Beauty: What The Soul Sees
Seeing a beautiful object or person makes the senses fulfilled. That is beauty on the outside. Indeed it is a pleasant experience when the senses are stimulated. But is this pleasure for long and is it of the essence? But what if the beautiful person one sees is heartless and insensitive? What if they lack character or dignity? Would that outer beauty suffice? Looking at a beautiful person merely gives pleasure. But what of beauty which is magnetic and uplifts the soul? When one sees the inner beauty of a person, then that may happen. Beauty is one of humanity’s most utmost quests.
Many people are under the notion that it has to do with appearances. One sees a shapely woman with flawless skin and impeccable features. And they think that’s what it’s all about. But beauty which is more substantial is often that which is intangible. That of the character, the heart and the soul. But people sometimes get impatient. They get attracted to something they immediately see. They hold on to something they can grasp and touch- the material. But what is material is temporal and passing. And that which is invisible to the eyes is more lasting. The folly of youth is oftentimes credulous.
They see a beautiful person and they render affection for them. Their notion of love is submitted to something which is skin deep. So they enter into marriage with the object of their adulation. Through time, they may disregard its appearance. Then come the crux of the matter- inner beauty. Is outer beauty completed by inner beauty? There ought to be a balance between the two. A pleasing appearance is to be complemented by substance. Attractiveness on the outside is oftentimes merely for passing pleasure.
But what of living with a heartless and insensitive one? One can imagine the grueling dilemma of such a circumstance. It will strip happiness and fulfillment from life. And sometimes it’s so easy for people to judge. They think beautiful people are instantly happy, and they feel sorry for those who are not. Then again, one should take a closer look. Life and happiness is so much more than being beautiful. It has to do with fulfillment of one’s inner needs and longings. It can be the warmth of a home, a loving partner or being abounding in compassion. This again, has nothing to do with a pleasing appearance.
These have to do with something within. So one should not be quick in judging. In giving more due to what can immediately be seen by the eyes. The physical is merely superficial. One should take time to see what is within - to look beyond what the eyes can see. It is where the essence of beauty lies.
What is within can make the soul happy. What is without is merely for the eyes. What the eyes see are merely on the surface, but what the soul sees is more noble.
