Free Speech a slippery slope to social Decay ?

I'm not one for watching the News.
But this story caught my eye while browsing today.

Do we have the right to burn a book in our garden should we choose to do so ?
Should we burn books at all ?

This news story got me thinking as to why the act in question was being committed, Obviously some words or ideas in the book were found to be offensive to the Person in committing the act.
Does this justify the actions ?

If written words can cause such offence,
were do we draw the line on Spoken or verbal Ideas and opinions ?
Or should we draw the line at all.

cheers

Very Good Simmo.
You got style Dude thumbs up
Nonsmoker, there are many famous examples in history and literature of burning books. It always leads to failure.

But It always hits me straight into the heart. I love books... I wouldn t burn a book even if it s a "bad one". It s not about the books it s about us people and our perceiving of them. wave
Non, further to your thoughts on the burning of books, in this particular case the girl was falsely accused which raises another issue in that should anyone be held in captivity without any proof of any misdeed just on the word of one person no matter who that person might be.
NON....
Below is a poster of a Movie that was taken from a book, all about the BURNING of BOOKS.......

Embedded image from another site

It has to be something like 40 years ago i read the book, whilst still at school.....
Written by a guy called,
Ray Bradbury
Zman you hit the nail on the head,
The point Im getting to is, is it ok to kill someone for doing it as its an effigy of the Idea with in.
Ariel Do you consider it a crime. scold
Simmo, that's an interesting idea of yours, making not reading books a crime, to me books are like blogs, some I will read some I won't, don't think I'd be keen on the idea of becoming a criminal because I didn't read a particular book, or blog for that matter.
Simmo I seen that Film.
Its up there with clockwork orange thumbs up

Must admit never read the book but its on my list cheers
Nonsmoker I am not a judge so I wouldn t quolify if it s a crime or not. For me it s just a bad thing.
Only the most ignorant of us would chose to live in darkness . Fortunately for our species there are some enlightend members and sometimes we even listen to them .
Ariel your right none of us are judges,

hug
NON....ahhh yes, CLOCKWORK ORANGE.....great movie.....
Could all this be considered a
CATCH 22....

Embedded image from another site
Catch 22 what a book Simmo.
Took me 6 months to read laugh
should we live in a world were anything goes as far as what we think and say or should there be limits,

Tis a dilemma alright.
But isnt this why we have the freedom of speech not actions?confused
NON...
I read all them back when i was in HIGH SCHOOL....
They were considered Compulsory reading for English 40 years ago.
I still have them somewhere around here.
thumbs up thumbs up
Non, on the first part, we are free to think what we like & no authority is going to stop that, well not with current technology, on the second part that's a different issue as what is said can be damaging to others so imo there has to be limits, again imo I should have the final say in what anyone says but I don't expect I'll get many to agree with me therelaugh
Zman thumbs up

Agree to disagree seems to be an option
dunno
Non, or in this particular case, stay away from Rome dunno
NON.....
Classic case of CATCH 22........
@Frank Just seen your comment now and have to agree,
But I think as Simmo is saying If I burn a book The only person Im hurting is myself,
by depriving myself of its content.
Assuming the book is mine to begin with. JMO
handshake
Non, I guess you can move to Pluto...rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing many problems in Earth rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing but that is a good idea to gain popularity rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing
Non I remember I struggled with that book Catch 22 too. Somehow it annoyed me laugh
Zman Tanks no Thanks thumbs up
My next blog will be my usual silly nonsense

Cyn Men are from Mars

Ariel
But this news article is paradoxical in the fact that it shows the stupidity firstly of the book being burned as if that would remove its fundamentals from existence. But then For it to become a legal and social issue.
A child to be burned for thinking this was Ok. as if that would eradicate the idea of book burning from Existence.

Not to mention the Cleric Lying and fabricating evidence.laugh
Hey Non wave
Thank you for sharing the article .... If she is guilty .... Then it is a Muslim country after all .... The girl could have burnt the Koran in private and not got caught ... Yet she chose to burn it where it could seen which is a sign of disrespect .....

I am assuming she was giving the Koran by locals ... And she got annoyed of the Muslim religion being force onto her with this religious Muslim book .... Its simpler to the blogs .... Here some try to force Christianity on us .... By condemning non Christians will go to hell bla bla bla ..... Sometimes I wish I could burn those blogs too grin

Or back in the day of witches etc ....

Nessa How are you wave T
he worst are the religious blogs that dont allow comments.
They annoy me.
But as Zman said we can choose what to read and what not. thumbs up

And you bring up the cultural Issue. I think its Important handshake
Nonsmoker, burning books, flags, houses or people is totally bad no matter of the reasons and excuses. dunno
Ariel yes I agree and would never do it myself.
But the condoning of death for it ?
A bit to close to a sacrifice to appease the gods for my liking.
But that's just me.wave
Non honestly I prefered not to check out the link till now since I prefered to discuss the topic in general. Now when I saw it, it s another example of madness and cruelty. Unfortunately, there is a lot of them in the world... I will not go further with discussing countries and religion since there are many vulnerable people here. To say the least. wink wave
I am good Non hope you well too .... Sorry about all the errors on my previous post, I must remember not to blog when I am in a rush grin

Ok We can choose what to read yes .... But if its religious then its a bit different ... I guess people take it as disrespect when they given the bible if they are not Christians ... Or the Koran if they are not Muslims ....etc

I come from a Hindu background .. And I spent 4yrs being a Christian read the bible went to church etc .... Yet I didn't find any comfort in it and I didnt I want to go back to following the Hindu faith cus I didn't faith comfort in that either ..... So I chose the part of spiritual
enlightenment and it seems to be great .... I love learning about my soul ....

I still get nagged by my family for not being religious anymore ...... But what makes me happy that is important to me ....

Anyways what I am trying to say people can get annoyed if they are given religious book that is not of their faith .....

About the blogs hmmm I know I don't have to read it but the Titles are very catchy/annoying laugh

All I can say about religion is the more it is forced the more people will walk in the opposite direction grin

Nessa
The trick is finding your beliefs
The magic is holding on to them.
peace
St_Elmo thumbs up
