Call Me Old Fashioned

The day when two strangers would sit opposite each other in a crowded room and take a chance has all but disappeared. The day when a friend would introduce you to someone that they thought would be your perfect match doesn’t happen anymore. And, the day when two people would meet at a mutual social event has also all but disappeared.

We find ourselves no longer writing letters to that someone special. We also find ourselves no longer engaging in lengthy telephone calls with that someone special.

Instead, we have decided that time is too precious to stop and smell the roses.
We would much rather text than call and we have decided that we had rather Instant Message rather than participate in a meaningful conversation.

I find myself sitting behind a computer where I can remain safe from rejection and judgment. I also find myself sending short text messages and IM’s with childish and impersonal abbreviations. My telephone etiquette has all but vanished. I now use such phrases as “I’ll hit you back later”,” hold on I’m getting a text” and “whatever”. Somehow, we have forgotten the basics. We have adapted and now accept these short and impersonal attempts to communicate as proper and acceptable.

Technology has provided a means to be impersonal and to build a wall from which we can hide and protect ourselves. No longer will there be that awkward moment in a conversation or fear of not being accepted. No need to concern ourselves with whether or not the other person likes us or if we like them. If they don’t like us, they won’t write back. If we don’t like them, we don’t write back.

Call me old fashioned, but I still enjoy laughing with someone not at someone.
I enjoy holding someone’s hand while taking a long walk after an evening meal.
I also enjoy having a conversation with someone that shares their thoughts.
Above all, I can open my heart, my mind and my ears…………………………
