Fighting fire with fire

Fighting fire with fire is such an interesting expression and while most of us know what it means, not all people really know where the expression comes from.

If you are trapped in a bushfire and you realize that you cannot escape it, you have to fight that fire with another fire. You simply start another fire; right where you are to create some space for yourself. By the time the main fire gets to you, you have a nice big open space where you can stay out of reach of the flames because you have deprived it of fuel.

Life is like that too. When you are surrounded by a problem, you have to create some space around you to protect yourself while dealing with it.

Sometimes you can use water to fight a fire but sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.

But something else I do not understand…
If you put your hand in a hole on you get bitten; why do you poke your hand back into the hole?dunno

Do some people never learn?confused

@Cat...... I use to believe in the term fighting fire with fire, but I've come to realize in life that Love and Forgiveness and being of a Humble spirit shows true character in a person!!
Have a great day my friend!!
thumbs up handshake
@ Cat - Having been a bush-fire fighter in years gone by the method of fighting fire with fire only works in open scrub/grass land, in a terrain of dense trees it won't work, you may be able to burn off the ground-cover but when the main fire arrives it will race through the tops of the trees (crowning), the lack of oxygen combined with the radient heat from above will result in your demise.... blues moping ..... grin cheers
Hi Daniel.
Your point is noted. But in my almost 62 years I have learned that sometimes you have to stand up. And then I will forgive afterwards.doh

Turning the other cheek only work when you deal with somebody with a conscience.

Hi Hans
As usual a very valid point. But I shall make sure to pick the right spot.

@catfoot,
If you put your hand in a hole on you get bitten; why do you poke your hand back into the hole? Do some people never learn?
on my opinion, actually those people knew and have learned thru what had happened before, but since they are too lazy to improve it, nor have felt comfortable with what they have done b4, they tend to pretend nothing doing wrong with those all, they will do it again and again...
those are characteristic of people that do not want to have any improvement on their life... just satisfy with what they have been achieved so far.
never and ever put yourself on such situation, coz it will cause destruction to your own life.
have a great day to you,too my dear friend..wave wine comfort
I hear you Cat.
My daughter has to deal with real bullies at school and today she told me that it just doesn't stop, no matter who she turns to at school. I have been to school and complained but its never taken seriously.
So today I told her to fight back but only harder and if she must be unfare,...so be it, however she must not start the fight.

Sy is altyd die stil enetjie, maar nie meer nie.

Have a great day
It's the same if you put up a "wet Paint" sign, a significant percentage will touch the paint, just to see doh laugh
Here in Norway they are fighting a fire going on and it has taken 55 houses already, it is a sort of bush fire,The heather is on fire, and they think it is started with electrical wires blown together and creating sparkles who lit the fire... Now thy just tell us they finally get that fire under control, but a new one is rising....Last week a whole place with very old houses born down in the western parts of Norway,in a place called Lærdal, a lot of people lost their home in that fire too. The one who is going on is on a half island close to Trondheim and the one just reportes is also close to Trondheim.
It is very windy at the fireplace, so they can not lit another fire to try stop it. Firefighters and fire helicopters are fighting the fire now. And the Norwegian army is called out to help. Wish you all a wonderful day and send some thoughts to those who lost their homes will you. Thank you!teddybear teddybear

Hi Karina
Yes, if you ignore a problem it does not go away; it just get bigger. But bullies are easier to handle. you only need to stand up to them and strike first.

Hi Wel
It must be a nightmare fighting fire in Norway; with all the trees and mountains. We have the same problem in our mountains but...

We also have vast open plains of savannah (grass plains) with very little trees. There you can stop a fire in his tracks by making another fire.

Though some time such a fire can also get out of control and then you have more problems for the insurances don't pay out when damage is self inflicted.

Mooi! That will stop him. And then teach her to forgive him afterwards. He may even become her friend.

Dear Catfoot; on this subject I like to share with you my favourite meaningful story that tells all about how is hard to escape individual human nature where some of us are Frog's and some Scorpions -some Horse and some Dog - like in Chinese horoscope, Loll.

"The Scorpion and the Frog"

A scorpion and a frog meet on the bank of a stream and the
scorpion asks the frog to carry him across on its back. The
frog asks, "How do I know you won't sting me?" The scorpion
says, "Because if I do, I will die too."

The frog is satisfied, and they set out, but in midstream,
the scorpion stings the frog. The frog feels the onset of
paralysis and starts to sink, knowing they both will drown,
but has just enough time to gasp "Why?"

Replies the scorpion: "Its my nature..."doh

In my opinion, it is not always about being lazy to improve or being mentally behind laugh It is all about individual nature that drives us to do things -which to some includes keep putting hand in the same hole and get bitten laugh wine
Hi Enigma
A great story.thumbs up

Btw. I did a blog on this a short while ago; must have been just before you came on the scene.

Thank you, but this is fire in the ground so they got to fight the one yesterday who took out 55 houses, but the new one might rise to a bigger fire they say, they have evacuated people from the area who is in the danger zone... Yes, it is not easy to fight forest fires here, you are right with the wary landscape and the high tress it can be a blast. But I know they have use the method here too, using fire against fire, but then again it can not be windy as it is these days... And it's weird for us to having a bush fire at this time of the year... surreal I call it. I hope they mange to put the fire out so it does not take any homes this time. hug teddybear hug
People who fight fire with fire usually end up with ashes~Pauline Phillips

When tempted to fight fire with fire, remember the Fire Department usually uses water.Unknown Author.
Wel
We are surrounded by sea and mountains here. Cape Town is built against the slope of Table Mountain and the entire peninsula is separated from the inland by mountains.

Sometimes it takes weeks to put a fire out and the damages are staggering. We have fire walls all over the mountains but when the wind is too strong it jumps those firewalls.

Only one careless deed and the cat is amongst the pigeons.
frustrated very mad doh
Hi Cincy
Yes they do but sometimes water is not enough or too dangerous to use. Different fire are fought by different means. Petroleum on fire cannot be put out by water. Just one example.
