Selling My Heritage?

I feel kind of sad. On Friday, to the disgust of a part of my family, I have accepted an offer for my house after it had been in the market for four months. According to the agreement I must vacate the house by the end of June.sigh

Selling it was not easy. I have been living in this house since I inherited it 30 years ago but my memories for it goes much further. As a child I spent a lot of time here. It feels as if I’m selling a part of myself. This is where my mother and my grandfather grew up. It is as they are here every day and but I’m getting older now and the house is too big for me.blues

The property had been in my family for more than 250 years. Originally it was a farm. When part of it was proclaimed as part of the town, my grandfather sold it to a developer but he retained the house. The rest of the property he sold to a neighboring farmer. The new township developed around his house.daydream

The original house had a thatched roof but it burned down in the middle fifties and my grandfather demolished the ruins and build a new house on the same foundations.snowed in

But it is not all sadness; in some ways I am very pleased to be departing from here. The small township I live in is surrounded on three sides by agricultural land and when the farmers clean the lands, we are invaded by mice. Being on the far edge of town, the cell phone and data signals are poor and we are often without electricity due to cable theft. For some reason I forgot to mention this to the various prospective buyers.liar

And now the big work starts; getting rid of the junk I have accumulated in 30 years and I have not found alternative accommodation yet. I will be residing with my sister for a few months while the furniture, appliances and effects that I opt to keep will have to go into storage until I have made up my mind about what to do with the rest of my life.hmmm

Something tells me I’m going to be very busy during the next month.doh

May you all have a wonderful day.wave

hug wave
Hi Cat! You must know that we are all creatures of habit, and we tend to believe that only that can make us happy what we have been experiencing so far.
Changes in our life are good and help us develop in many fields. Once you've dared the jumping into the cold water you will surely enjoy your new life! dancing cool
You can still have your house kept in your memories, and we always tend to mostly keep the good ones! hug cheering wave
Btw, Cat. I can still view my house of childhood on google maps. Reid st.7, Benoni.
It has hardly changed! wink
Torn feelings Cat blues /applause totally understandable..would be strange if you did not have conflicting feelings. Memories are wonderful and you will always have them daydream but moving on too brings is HaPPy thoughts..yay

Good Luck with it all... don`t envy you the packing up uh oh But enjoy your new move cheering applause banana

laugh rolling on the floor laughing
Hi catfoot yes it is not always easy to sell a house that you have known for so long.
Now that you have done the deed you will it time find that the move was a good one.
Now a busy but exciting time will start for you.
New neighbours, new friends? Less work for you as you will live smaller.
Will it now be in an appartment or condo?
I lived in many of those and trust me get another smaller house, as you will have to put up with music etc from the people around you in a appartment.

Hi Wallops, it is not packing that gives me the the biggest problems. It is waht to keep and what to get rid of. Can you imagine all the junk I can accumulate in 30 years. A garage, a tool shed and a loft full of it.
doh hug wave
Hey Mr. Cat, what ever you decide to do with life, wish you the very best. Settle in or settle down, please try and keep those blogs coming. Happy house hunting!!! hug hug
Hi British
When and if I buy something else it will have a piece of ground around it, however small. But I have other considerations as well.

I'm looking at emigrating but that brings countless new problems. With the poor exchange rate and higher cost of living in other countries, it will reduce me from being comfortable to a poor man.
hug wave
Cat, I suppose you mean by this that I was living in Transvaal? Yes, I heard that nowadays it has become politically awkward there, but when I was a child it was a very nice place. The last time when I went back to South- Africa I liked Joburg and Capetown most. hug
All the best mr cat ,, truly understand the feelings!hug bouquet
Hi Usha
I suspect that the time to blog will be rather limited for the next month or so. I should not be sitting here now at all. I am alone and have to do all these things on my own. I have only moved house four times in my life.
hug wave
Calleis
I had - and still have - family there and go there from time to time. Spent some good holidays there as a child. But as you said, nowadays...
doh
hug wave
Thank you Zeurich
But I am looking forward to better cell and data coverage, not even to mention a more reliable electricity supply.applause
hug wave
Understood Mr. Cat. Hope you will settle down well, soon and comfortably. All the secrets will be surely missed.hug
wave hi cat congrats on getting sale, I know you are sadblues and as you know I can not relate to that as I have found each move I have made an adventure. Getting to make new friends, and your eyes wander to new doors. Poor in gelt but not in spirit, I say. When older and have experienced ups and downs in life maybe some can appreciate the simple life. Lots of things do not cost much cat, a walk in the forest, or along coast, or through universities taking a course which maybe you never thought of before. New hobbies with like minded people you will make friends easily. You like to write so maybe writing for local mag or something like that.
I truly hope my enthusiasm as rubbed off on you, your move to your sisters first will give you time to make some good descions without the trap-ings of the past restricting you.
I do wish you well cat and don't leave us as that would indeed be sad for us.
teddybear peace yay hug handshake
Hi Usha
Secrets? I have no secrets.laugh

No skeletons in my cupboards but all is buried in the garden is nobody's business.rolling on the floor laughing

Try not to do what I did, having decided to move to another country & with the help of 7 large rubbish skips & a car boot sale managed to get all my "stuff" into one lorry instead of the usual two required, moved here but bought a house that came with loads of tools & equipment left by the previous owner, who moved abroad, plus had to buy a house full of stuff for the guest house, now I recon it'll take three lorries to move doh beer
Well at least you won't have to be next to your wife-beating neighbor anymore......
Hi Red,
Finding good homes for my animals was the sad part but they were all sorted out before I accepted the offer. I will only keep my African Grey.
hug wave
Yes its sad,but all the best for your new home and new lifethumbs up
Hi Zman
If I relocate to my #1 destination there will be no point in taking anything along. All my appliances will be useless as they have 110V and we use 220/250V here.doh
cheers wave
With the high cost of transportation it doesn't normally make sense to move things like that any distance in any case, probably cheaper to buy new at the other end, mind that may not apply to somewhere tucked away where goods have to be imported anyway laugh rolling on the floor laughing
Hi India
I will be living with my sister for a few months and may even visit my daughter for a month or two. A nw home is still very deep and forr off in the pipeline.
hug wave
Hi Zman
Yes, Everything is imported; even most food. Things are very expensive there and it appears to be a less lucrative destination.
dunno doh
Good move, they ........ all the farmers everyday like rats now.

as for a tiny town, its house invasions, and c... dont do anything, just support it.

as for me, got nowhere to go. brother, family kicked me out long ago, after taking the money.
Better take your fishing gear then that way at least you won't starve cool laugh rolling on the floor laughing
Hi Zman
Hm, I could do fishing trips for rich American coots. It is a possibility I'm looking at.
grin doh
Catfoot, congratulation on the sale, I hope you got enough money to buy something new when you find out where to stay? I wish you good luck with the cleaning, and I know that shallow feeling on get when one sell the only home one have had... I felt did when we sold my dads house some years back, but it was a good thing too. I hope you will be able to throw away the old things with hard hand, no need to let them be a part of your new life. And as I said, good luck with your new home when time tells you were to settle.
yay teddybear hug
You could always live on your boat dunno but you'd have to change your name to something like Saltyseadog as Catfoot wouldn't fit at all doh laugh rolling on the floor laughing laugh
Hi Wel
It is a large house in a small and very secluded and sought township. People don't often sell here. I got the price I wanted.
hug wave
Zman
I sold my boat in February shortly before I retired. Had to sell before winter arrived. You get nothing for a boat in winter. Was named 'Catfoot Too'
You let the cat out Mr. I will invest on a shovel on my next visit to Africa, to dig that garden.rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing laugh grin
Hi Usha,
Only skeletons you will find. All my ex-girlfriends are buried there.laugh

Kidding, but all my pets who had died are there.sigh
hug wave
Give it some thought, what a good way of getting money out of the country without loosing on the exchange rate professor or maybe some local diamonds, gold etc uh oh grin
Hi Cat,

My friend, I wish you the best on your move!thumbs up Are you getting anyone to help you or are you going it alone? Are you staying in Cape Town? Keep everyone updated on the progression of your move. Cat, you have lots of friends here!handshake
My grandparents' house where I grew up, I've got no say at all. My uncles would want to sell it one day... Each time I go back to my hometown, I feel a tug in my heart when I passed by the house. So much of my happy childhood memories there.... My grandpa was a gem and like I mentioned in Welela's blog before, if I have a chance, I'd like to be his grand daughter again next life. I miss him so much .... sad flower sad sigh
Hi Jim
All the answers are in my blog. I'm getting rid of the excess stuff and putting the rest into storage. I will be living at my sister's place for a few months until I have decided what I want to do with my life.

I am looking at emigration but it does not seem like a viable option at the our ever worsening exchange rate.
cheers wave
