My Cat Is Back!
No, this is not one of those stories of a cat walking 250 km to go home and crossing a mountain and two raging rivers in the process. It would not have worked; home is not where it used to be when last he was there. This little bastard hitched a ride, or to put it more correctly, he stowed away.
After an impulsive phone call Sunday evening I got into my car yesterday (Monday) morning at 4 am and hit to road to my friend’s farm. I told him I’m coming for a quick visit but he probably guessed it was not to see him but rather the animals.
I could only spend 4 hours there before returning and when it was time to go, the cat was missing. In the end I left without being able to say bye to him.
While coming down the mountain, three quarter way home, I almost overturned the car when something sneaked up between the two front seats.
Monsieur – that is his real name but he prefers to respond to Meneer – announced his presence with a loud meow and settled on my lap as if it was the most normal thing in the world, purring as loud as a diesel engine.
He must have gotten into the car while the wife of one of the farmhands cleaned the car inside. He often slept in or on top of the car when it was parked on the driveway.
My sister was not happy but there was something soft in her eyes when I told her how it came about during supper. Her only comment was that the same story won’t work with the dogs.
May you have a great day and don’t be cattish.

Funny how some cats can have that vicious or cross expressions on their faces.
She sounds wiser than me..! If I were her, I would "huuuush.. huuush.. huuuush!!" the cat or even worse. I would send the cat back to your friend the next day!
Hmm, but then my sister loves me and she knows how I feel about animals.
The only reason why she did not want my animals there is because she keeps her own animals and in Cape Town we have limits on how many animals you may keep.
That's AWESOME!!! It was meant to be!
What a sweet story! And how clever your cat is! Enjoy this, my friend!
I can tell you without blushing that I was not one but sorry to see him. Surprised yes, but not sorry.
I don't think the cat planned his 'escape'. It was probably just the force of habit that got him to sleep in the car. He loved sleeping in the car.
I have to get a man for that.
I can tell you I had the fright of my life when he came through between the seats. I only caught the movement from the corner of my eye and did not know what the hell it was. My first thought was a snake.
I think I would prefer the two-legged variety of cat to warm my bed as well. The four legged species tend to leave hair on the bed.
On the other hand, it is not my feet that bothers me. Cold feet may be of some advantage. Iy is by back I want to be kept warm.
Sorry, Cat. But I can imagine SA way of living..
All I can say is that I'm glad to have one of them back. It was 6 hours on the road for a four hour visit but absolutely worth it.
It was a lucky "escape" ! This Monsieur Cat will bring you good luck in your later days.
Never fear when the cat is near.
Hmm, so you should. How old were you when you left SA; old enough to be left with some impressions?
Cats are good friends and affectionate enough when they feel like it.
It really happened this way; the only inconsistency is that I could have taken the cat back with enough time to spare. I hope my sister does not read this blog. They do read my blog from time to time.
Yep, die anderdag môre was die kat weer daar. En nou harloop almal weer na hulle vertalers.
Was only kidding with you! I'm sure, your car is fine..!
Can something ever be perfect. Look at me, I'm not a perfectionist but I expect everybody else to be.
A car, to me, is a gadget to get you from point A to point B. While I do enjoy the few luxuries my car has to offer, I enjoy my dilapidated 25 year old pickup truck just as much and drive it more often than my car.
If my transportation is not good enough for somebody then I'm not good enough either.
Btw, are you going to keep the cat in your new place?
It is not a problem at all. My door is sheltered from the elements and I leave it half open in the day and at night I leave the bathroom window open so the cat can go out. He used to be a real 'stroller' but now he hardly goes out and follows me even to the toilet. My sister's dogs are confined to the back yard and the cats (my sister keeps 3 of them) can use the front garden. There is some animosity between the cats but they will get used to each other.
And the pets seem all so sweet! Happy living!
It is not that she does not like animals; on the contrary, she keeps two dogs and 3 cats. The problem is that we are limited to the number of animals we keep in Capetown and each animal must be registered with the City Council.
My dogs would have been a problem but I don't think my sister would have minded if asked her to keep the cat in the first place. It just seemed so unfair to me to keep the cat and let the dogs go.
What are you talking about, girl. We live behind a 2 meter high fence with spikes on top. Every window is fitted with burglar bars and every external door has a steel safety gate. Some people even fit one or two safety gates inside their homes to isolate different parts of the house when they go out.
The house I just sold was decorated in the same way. We live in concentration camps.
The safety gates are constantly locked. Even a spiked fence cannot always keep them out.
