A Conspiring Black Bird Bearing Grudges?

I can imagine that the first thing that comes to mind is a conniving bird on CS, sending malicious PMs behind the scenes but relax ladies, I’m not talking about one of you. This is a REAL bird.laugh

Crows are much smarter than what we may think. They top the avian IQ scale and that is not just because they can be taught speech like parrots.blah blah

They can count, recognize complex shapes and they learn by watching humans. They adapt to their environment and use it. They build and use tools by creating knives to cut leaves as well as hooks out of pieces of wire which they use to fish insects out of hiding places.professor

Crows throw clams, nuts, & shells on the roads and wait for passing cars to run over them. This helps break the hard shells and the crow can enjoy its delicious treat inside. And they watch the traffic lights to know when it is safe to deposit and retrieve their morsels of food. They provide for a rainy day by stashing food in secret caches and guard it.wow

They have an excellent memory and can recognize human faces. Scientists wore masks to tag a number at a certain university campus and the crows did not like it. When they go out on the grounds wearing the same masks, the crows attack them but when they walk around without the masks they are ignored.lightbulb

Scientists suspect that their caws are not random. They believe it is a complex communication code but have not been able to unravel it.conversing

These mischievous birds form complex social behaviors and act in concert to perform complex tasks such as theft. They conspire and set up decoys to deceive their victims.idea

Creative thinking is the hallmark of intelligence.thumbs up

Catfoot, I agree. Crows are super intelligent. Watched them on YouTube and some of the tasks they performed were amazing and would blow your mind away! wine hug
Crows can differentiate human faces, if a new human comer
comes to their territory they have different kind of sounds
to alert other crows, hey a stranger around.thumbs up
Hi Bung
Yes, and they remember your face if you hurt them.
doh grin
Yeah, and they are attracted by bright colors too.
Hi Bung
Hmm, esp shiny things. Some valuable thing you can find in a crow's stash. They are thieves on top of it.grin
cheers wave
@ Cat - wave .. But they only know one word in english..... faark faark faark....... laugh rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

.... grin cheers
Eh, Catfoot, it is not the crow that is the stealer of shiny objects, it is the Magpie... at least is that what we say in Norway. The Western Jackdaw is from the crow family and a old friend of my dad had a tame one he used to walk around with this big bird on his shoulders. But on day the bird took off and he had named it Kari. So we heard him the whole fall walking around in the neighborhoods calling for his Kari. It was all tame and not scared of him. I don't like the crows to much, they are big rats with wings on. But interesting information about the crows. No wonder it was a big animal/bird in the Native American folk lore.
They have several tales about the crow and it's intelligence.
yay teddybear hug
Hi Wel
Then you will find it interesting to know that the magpie is also part of the crow family; hence the similar behavior. Only not as smart as the real crow.

Love the blog Cat, very interesting. Maybe you can train them to rob a bank like they did with the dobermans in a movie.applause
Hi Val
I think it will be very possible but I doubt it if they will be very efficient bank robbers. The will only steal the silver coins. We want the banknotes!laugh

Hi Jim
I expected you to tell me that the others attacked the crow as dolphins attack sharks in packs. Crows are documented to have attacked humans in small flocks after that person had harmed them.

I heard (not researched) that crows have killed unattended human babies by pecking their eyes out; even inside their homes.dunno
cheers wave
I have heard that also about them attacking children. I remember 15 years ago, I was out walking in the morning and I had a crow swope down on me and his talons hit me in the head. From then on when I went for a walk, I carried a golf putter for protection.laugh
No, the other crows just stood around and let the hawk kill the crow. dunno
handshake Cat,, We seek the company of people who are like us. Show me your friends and I will tell you who you are!

So true, I only had one 'true' family for many years but many of them have perished in the mid E.
cheers
Hi Jim
My only run ins with crows have been when I had to chase them off when trying to steal my dogs' food when they were sleeping but luckily they never bore any grudges for that. Actually, I found them very inquisitive and fairly friendly birds. As I said, we have thousands of them around.

Hi Luke
The Middle East appears to be a very dangerous place.doh

You’re kidding right? At least there you know exactly who is who, unlike SA.doh

They are smart creatures...my sister has a crow that waits for her around the patio...and gets food...he talks to her and is not afraid to visit with her...even was a passenger in her car!!...obviously figured out most humans enjoy having him or her around!!
Ah Loulou
A few hundred years ago she would have been burned on a stake for that. Crows and ravens were considered to me of the devil and it symbolized death and destruction.doh

Those that forever tried to steal my dog's food never got close but the were not unfriendly either.

@Cat....so so so very true...teddybear hug wine
Therese
If your friends are thieves and you are not, you will be one soon.doh

I think that is pretty universal - in the West, that is. Crows and ravens were historically seen as evil and therefor bad news. The feeling still lingers in many cultures.

Superstitions are just that...to me it is silly to think a black crow is evil or bad...not to mention black cats...perhaps I am evil...hahawine
Hi Lou
The poor cats had it even worse in medieval times. the were mercilessly hunted and killed; thrown alive off church steeples. frustrated

At least the crows were a little luckier. The were not declared enemies of the church as far as I can tell.dunno

That breaks my heart...poor felines...thank goodness this practice is now passé...wine
Lou
The cat population in Europe was decimated. Rats and mice flourished and it was a direct cause of the Black Plague that killed millions of people. doh
hug wave
Hello Cat,wave I agree with you crows are an intelligent bird, but afew years ago ,where I live, the crow population got larger, and we noticed the song bird population just about dissappeareddoh And once the small songbirds were almost decimated, mosquitoes and other bugs showed up. And the story goes on, I m happy if I don t see any crows, yay yay
Lou
Yep, I almost wanted to say it served them right but I won't.grin

Hi 12121
Crows cause a lot of damage to the crops and even kill weak infant livestock. In some areas they are a pestilence.

A very successful species.
cheers wave
Cat!!!doh wow

Be careful what you insinuate! I said I used to know!!!

As in...No Longer! Astalavista!!blues
Hi Therese
You misunderstood me. I was not talking about you personally. That 'you' was in general.sad flower

That's not a crow, but fascinating.

I couldn't resist to post the pic.
I know it is technically not a crow, but when a kid I had Mynah birds. They too were smart. I also observed they could be vicious killers that even put the cat in awe if they caught a mouse in their cage. Veggan my butt. On at least two occasions mice crept into their cages and they just descended on it. Bashing the mouse over and over into the splash guard at the bottom of the cage with their beaks until eventually it broke apart whereupon they hauled the better pieces up to their food bowl for consumption. Previously the cat had been very interested in the birds. However, after staring wide eyed at the incredible viciousness of their attack on the first mouse, thereafter he totally avoided the birds and even left the room when I would let them out of their cage.
