Because while young and living in Brooklyn, NY, the Johnny pump was what we used to cool off in the Summer months.

I remember in 1 st grade if we did something wrong the Teacher would make us put our hands out and crack us with the ruler....
We had to kneel infront of the huge Statue of the Sacred Heart for a whole class with our hands stretched out !! really exhausting.
I had my hair cut [chopped actually] with a blunt scissors for laughing too loudly at play !! Girls didnot diet and we walked to school 6miles and back, we saved our money [School Bus] and bought Candy instead. We hadnt got Duvets, we had sheets, and heavy Blankets and an Eiderdown, it was hell making a bed. No central heat and just an open fire [never lit] and a smell of damp...

I am so old because in class I stood to reply to a question the teacher asked.

Party lines, yes. I like Ike buttons. Also the iceman bringing blocks of ice to the tenements and his concern that more and more folks on his route were buying refrigerators. Also the junkman in a horse drawn cart (complete with a straw hat on the horse) yelling bring out your junk and the sadness of the day when he came by truck and my friend, his horse, wasn't there, then he stopped coming all together. Watching Khruschev banging on the table with his shoe live from the UN while screaming a threat to see us buried. Being released from school when JFK was shot and watching Ruby shoot Oswald live on B&W television a day later.
I am so old that there was no electricity and we used to study by lamps of kerosine oil.
Or Captain Kangaroo and Mr Green Jeans....
Oh Ken, I remember that one with the horse and cart. Here in England he would shout out `Rag and Bones`... not sure why the bones confused

Im so old that when i was a kid they tubes in the tires...(my father would bring the flat in the house in winter...Patch it...check for leaks in the bath tub....put it back in the tire and me and my little brother would each take turns on the ole hand air pump blowing it up......rolling on the floor laughing
And the classrooms still had the inkwell desks.....rolling on the floor laughing
Inkwell desks? LoL, I remeber the little jars of ink and first learning to write with a quill, later replaced by a fountain pen. They didn't phase that out till the newer ball point Bics became cheap.

rags and bones is probably a satirical throwback to the older European plague era cries of 'bring out your dead'.
I remember the fire drills...and what they taught us to do if attacked by the bad guys....theyed make us get under our desks and cover our heads...(A lot of good that would have done)..rolling on the floor laughing
Im so old that when i was a kid...i had to sit there and watch what my Parents were watching...."Sing Along With Mitch"...rolling on the floor laughing
I m so old, my little niece asks me , if I was around when they invented fire.rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing
