I remember shopping on Friday nights in town. Three blocks full of stores. Stores were open til 9pm. Otherwise 5. Closed noon on Saturday, many anyway. Sunday all were closed. It took hours to shop cause you ran into neighbors and yakked.
Mom made a list. If you forgot something..too bad..wait til next month.
Now the town is a ghost town. Mostly empty store fronts. And people shop any time on the north side at Wally World.
We had two dime stores, 4 drugstores, 3 hardware, 6 or more clothing, 3 shoe stores. And more..all for a city of a few thousand. Now the downtown is lawyer offices and bars.
Of course, tons of shopping was done out of the Sears and Wards catalogs and picked up in the store or shipped. Remember the Xmas Wish book? I would look at toys forever. Mark lots. Then mom would tell me..pick out 5 you REALLY want. And then your dad and I will decide which, if any, you get for Xmas.
I learned to "own" things by picture and get bored with things NOT owning them. No impulse buying for me.
daydreamOf COURSE!! I exactly absolutely remember ALL those things!!

How could I NOT remember?? We grew up together! In the Very Same Town!!

Just curious -- What State were you in?
I was in Minnesota.

Still in the same pl;ace..Wisconsin. Farm country. I remember sitting in front of dad on the tractor going out to the field.
Til I got too big. Then sit on the fender and get long arms because he ordered me to hang onto fender back and headlamp! Get off when we got to the field. He would go plow and I would walk behind in the soft, warm furrows looking for worms and anything interesting. I miss him and those warm days.crying

Yeah. I know. It's from your "Learn From History" blog.
But it fits into this "Olde Things" blog real well.

Anyway ...
Did you ever read the book, "Little House In The Big Woods"?
It Sounds like you're channeling Laura Ingalls Wilder.

BTW, Y'all --
Laura was born in Wisconsin -- same as orz -- and her Big Woods book is set there.

If I didn't Know that orz was born before Laura died, I'd almost suspect reincarnation!

I had a desk such as this one when I was grade school.

Yeah. That's got some age on it awright bear.
I started out with a slightly older vintage -- it had an old Ink Well hole.

I know a guy a bit older'n I, and he USED the ink well.
One of the pupils was assigned the task of going around filling the wells.

NOT the task to be assigned to the Class Klutz scold For obvious reasons uh oh

Yup. I remember the 1st transistor radio.
Quite similar to that one, except it was red.

Still remember the brand -- Magnavox®

My dad got a larger one so he could listen to Minnesota Twins Games while working outside.

Dad's passed.
The radio's still going. Son asked to have it & uses it same as his Grandpa. daydream
