Cook on wood Cook Stove?

You will not believe.. Years ago.. I moved into a rental home that had a majestic wood cook stove. My mom and grandmother went crazy! They told me all about and how to cook on it. I live in a very hot part of N. CA.. and even though I had an electric range and oven as well.. I did not use them. I got hooked into the wood cook stove! Since then I wanted a wood cook stove. I looked high and low for over 10 years.. 2500.00 was out of my price range but it was a majestic just like I used in that home. A week or so ago, out of the blue the thought hit me again. Just small salesman type were 1500.00. Just killing time I decided to key into my local craigslist. What did my tiny eyes did appear! A majestic wood cook stove! 400.00. However this Majestic wood cook stove looked just like my majestic from 10 years ago.. When the person agreed to let me come see it.. He did not tell me the address, but I told him I already thought I knew the address and gave his address to him. He "LOL" and said yes! IT WAS MY MAJESTIC! Well today he delivered it! Though it wont fit in my home (just yet) It has made its way home to me. Now I do not know if any of you out there have ever had food cooked on a wood cook stove (Majestic) but it is best cooking ever! If you had a choice to beat the electric bills or gas bills would you want a Wood cook stove? Though my pregnancy days are over.. This gives me wonder to the saying towards women, barefoot and pregnant. I don't wonder.. as back in the days the wood cook stove was the place to be.

That is very interesting! I've never though of this!...confused
lol when you think about it. No wonder women did not work to bring home the bacon. Spent all their time pregnant, and staying by the wood cook stove cooking and to keep warm. When hubby returned home from a hard days work. She would warm him up and whoops there comes another one. lol. Notice that women really never got out of the house to earn a living before the electric stove, the automatic washing machine, then came along the tv, dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, and more grocery stores came in and more electric items, (less pregnancy happened when batteries were created! lol).. just saying.. then came women's lib.. along with birth control, and more batteries!
Then out went the wood cook stove!
Wow thats a neat story.
ITs nice that you got your magestic back and the same one you first cooked on. So sweet!

That`s brill wind.. so HAPPY for ya!!! grin
wave Love hearing your story about the wood stove. When I was a kid , and helped out on my Grandparents farm, I remember the worlds best bacon and eggs were cooked on a wood stove. Gramma s homemade bread was to die for. That woodstove is long since gone, but its memories still warm the heart.
You have a Good day, hug hug
Thanks all.. and for sure with the cooking being the best! The best part.. It was the first wood cook stove I cooked on.. but it makes it more special that it was my momma and granny that taught me on it.. Just lost my mom on Aug 1st, this year, so I tend to think she had a hand in making it happen! ;)
You bring back a lot of memories dear lady. Yes, I had relatives who cooked on that wood stove. There on the family farm everything came from the animals and garden, and not to forget the ducks and chickens. They sold to the neighbors the birds, crops, eggs, cream, milk, etc. Of course they made their own cheese, butter, cottage cheese... etc, nothing was wasted. The meals cooked on the wood stove were outstanding. All the favors could not be duplicated in this modern world. And the cook... she was a blind woman. On one visit, I remember my son who was a toddler at the time, wanted some cheese on his bread. Insisted it was cheese, which we told him it was not, it was a bright orange butter. giggle. And I remember a raspberry shortcake to die for. Those were the day~!
Baking in the oven of a wood stove now that is a challenge for sure.
Impossible to keep the heat just right wave
Nothing...NOTHING bakes bread like a wood cook stove.
It truly is to die for! smitten

What a wonderful story. Unbelievable how things sometimes happen. Would love to have a stove like that but as you mentioned the price you pay today for a wood cook stove, if you can find one, is a bit too high for most of us.
LoL, we certainly agree about the ash box. What I suspect happens is an empty ash box is a reservoir of cold air beneath the fire. Ok, the classic physics of that maybe don't mesh because heat goes up, not down, but I still think that is the problem. I have indeed seen that the stove works better with a full ash bin, and best all when the ash bin has hot ashes. Point of fact, sometimes when starting out I put charcoals into my ash bin and ignite them. When those charcoals are burning, then I build my wood fire above that.

Yes the prior owners of this house located the wood stove about 1.5 feet away from the wall and put bricks under its feet to isolate it from the floor. This allows radiates of the heat which is fine when it is hot, but like I wrote getting hot takes awhile.

BTW, Heartland here.
You so lucky, grew up on a farm, wood stove amazing.
coffee was always on, ate in he kitchen in winter, sat around a big table after supper, chat coffee, no tv those days.
You are so lucky, too expensive in my country if you can find one.
Enjoy !! wish I was there !
yes grew up on grandmas country cookin/rip,fired it up in summer n winter, good grub.
I loved reading your blog, it brought back good old memories. I've tried them before, just love toast cooked on them and yes I remember standing by them to keep warm, I can almost feel their warmth right now.
Times sure have changed.
Hope you get that wood cook stove going again and enjoy using it and whatever you cook on it. wine
