There is a show on Bravo call From Friends to Lovers. The transition from the two has a lot of complicated dynamics to it. It is a fairly new show and out of the, I think 4 couples, it only looks like one of them is having a fairly successful transition from friends to lovers. What I like about the show is you see how difficult it really is to become lovers with a friend...how each partner has expectations not met, how intimacy is the key to the transition and how uncomfortable that can be among friends.
Maybe this is how this fellow feels is a way to be close to you, and upon communicating with him, this just may open the doors for HIM to feel free to express his true inner feelings toward you. This does not mean he doesn't feel toward you as you feel toward him, he just may be thinking the same as you, and the friend request is his way of expressing himself until he has enough courage to express his feelings to you...
As the old saying goes: winners never lose... and losers never win. Why is this?.. because winners never give up, and losers always quit before the race is over!
Follow this through and allow HIM be the one to tell YOU he's not into YOU like that... not you talking to yourself about what YOU think of how he may, or may not feel toward you.... that's jacked!
That's the way it is and it's better to know that as early as possible.

I agree with sistacallie...it might just evolve later. Enjoy the friendship.
Well...sometimes it happens...that being said...go off and find yourself one that sees you as more...it maybe his loss...so test the waters else where...you may find your friend quite jealous?...just a thought...
