Question - what is a another word for male lover?

I've gone blank. Want to say character A is character B's lover but I'm not crazy about the word at that point - too twee. doh Boyfriend is even worse.

The context is that he had been her friend for the last two years, her lover for the last six months.

When I ask the thesaurus it only comes up with female options (mistress, concubine, courtesan)

So I'm asking the ladies what you've called your lovers, and the gents what you would like to be called.

Maybe I should spend less time writing and more time out there finding out stuff first-hand.

I would not dream of saying my lover, my partner is the right thing to say.
My ex-husband and I both called each other Boo-baby... or how about Honey Bun... or Tuts ... YOU is a good one laugh
Meet my Honey Bun, or meet my Boo-baby, or meet my Tuts, or meet my YOU...conversing handshake comfort
Mi Fidanzato. =. Boyfriend in italian , it kind of rolls off the tongue .
Vivian...in Afrikaans we don't have anything but friend. I think it is because sleeping together, without being married, was never an option...so why create a word for that. Know my mother sometimes uses the word houvrou and houman when she refers to people having a sinful relationship.
Hey Viv

Beau, suitor or inamorato grin
I call mine, my guy or my man....... angel

Actually Ek it was easier in Afrikaans, jou man is net jou man. Maklik.

Hey Dream

The origin of inamorato is Italian based on Latin amor 'love'
