Obesity is on the rise

In a world so full of starving many (UN says about 75 percent) why is this a continued problem in the first world?

Anyone?

What are the factors that contribute to this challenge?

Thanks all for your reads and participation.

modern life style disease........laugh
Living here in a govt housing, I always have this little game, when there's somebody walking before me and he or she is quite on the bigger side, I'd guess she or he is a foreigner. I'm always 99% right. Maybe all the food are too much enriched and they don't unload those daily taken calories due to automation. Then I happened to work in a food factory and there's a majority of basically oversized women not much with the men. Though, most men have protruding bellies. That's when I realized why.laugh
The existence of the Internet and Twitter and Facebook insidiously discourage physical activity.
One of the factors, parents have less kids now therefore kids get 'better' food? Also, not many siblings to fight food over?

Oh! Most moms are working nowadays so too tired to cook at end of the day. Takeaways or fast food seem to be the solution. The easy solution...

Lack of exercise. When we were small, always go out and play unlike kids nowadays ( mine included uh oh ) stuck at home with their laptops ( yup, mine too! doh ) and game consoles. But then, it's no longer safe to let kids linger outside like how it used to be...just not safe anymore, sadly..
Teena, wow I like that, it sustains the saying that goes like: hmnnn the world of plenty and therefore over eating?
Most of us in the first world have it so good that things like obesity can surface and become a problem of our life style.

It is believed that American restaurants and other food venders throw out enough food daily to feed a lot of the starving around the world.
Tatami, wow that is quite a unique way of noticing them eh??? But it is definitely a sign of wealth or modern world disease like Teena said.
Hi Phyllis Processed and fast food here in the USA seems to be a big problem along with not enough exercise. I exercise but it does not seem to take the weight off and I eat my own cooking with too many carbs that's probably the culprit. For supper I had stir fry and a glass of wine but no cup cakes. rolling on the floor laughing
Ken oh yes. Instead of going out and walk and or do anything to exercise our body, we seat there just sitting while eating?

Thanks Ken.
How terribly true Mimi. Yes our lack of community involvement is also a factor I guess.

We allow all our kids to stay home and be on their games for long extended hours.

Not good. Thanks Mimi.
If countries like America, Canada, Australia, and the rest of the first world countries managed food better and distributed what was left to the rest of the world, there would be no famines anywhere.

Lets take water, Canada has more fresh water than the rest of the world combined, Canada is SO wasteful with water its beyond belief. Canada could easily supply the world with drinking water and not even miss it, but unfortunately Canada is driven by economics and you don't make money by giving something away. Its too bad because Canada could answer the prayers of a lot of people around the world.
Hello Johnny, I for one don't eat doughnut or any junk food, but let me tell you though, Johnny, I have a tendency of liking Banana Split at least once every two months from Coldstone..
I think the key Joe is to know how much calories can our body burn and then only eat enough calories that are useful for our energy.

Yes knowing our metabolism rate is a good help.

You can never go wrong on good exercise that is for sure.
Have to agree with Twazzle as here it is mostly the poorer people who are the biggest and widest. The more filling high carb foods are cheaper than healthy food. Fruit and most vegetables are way too expensive for a person with a low income. For instance 2 rather small sweet potatoes or 4 tomatoes cost more than a bread so they rather take the bread.

City planners are another culprit...watched a documentary about the distance it takes a person without transportation to go to a grocery store to buy fruits and veggies...it is too far!!...local stores carried everything processed not fresh produce...some people have no choice but to buy convenient store foods...some country's cities are too vast...no local food shops around...dependent on cars to go anywhere...
Tatami thanks for the detailed information.
One thing I can add is this. For every cup of rice which is 70 calories, it's duration of energy giving to our body is about an hour. I have known that the equivalent in bread is one slice and only lasts 10 minutes and hungry again.

Anyways I consume a lot of rice with a little bit of meat but so much on fruits and vegetables.
Track wow that is so amazing about the water. Yes, on the excess of food we have here even more amazing.
Ed my dear friend, wow that's very nice of you on your contribution. I am at awe. You look healthy and robust my friend.
That is true Lindsy...it looks so delicious and you can have it without much effort. laugh Still prefer home cooked meals so they are not making money out of me.
have a look at OgGoDeo's profile pics and u will see that it is no problem at all...

BUT!!!

The reason so many are starving is because of war and droughts. The displacement of people who are escaping countries with corrupt leaders and finding nothing when thy get where they are going.

The solution? Peace and helping each other just like they did in the real "old" days!

Indeed how true that is my dear Lou.

Convenient store is probably only selling mostly junk although lately I see apples, bananas, and salad in their shelves.

Poor choices simply is the culprit.

And money like Twazzle said.sad flower
Halvo thanks for all your valuable addition. I believe that information as well as discipline are the keys that can truly take us away from this problem.

On my other thread one mentioned that " THE ONLY WAY TO DEAL WITH THIS IS TO SHAME THEM".

I know it's very radical and rather base to do it but are there some suggestions?

Thanks.
G I am sure you're right.
not too sure about being right...
but a good piece of cake here and there...
it depends on how much u need and burn...
Very much so Ed.
That's the key G. We have to know our metabolism rate as opposed to what we take in.

Thanks G.
Some people are just really hungry and love to eat burger pizza cake thumbs up
Of course VL, I believe that eating those foods that are so heavy in preservatives are indeed poisonous to our health.

We become what we eat, so they say.

How about gluten.. that's another joke it's added on our food.
Love if course we eat when we're hungry. It is when we overeat that's causing the problems.

I think GMO's are a problem...not much nutrients in them in comparison to the old foods/grains...but certainly we do not work harder than our previous ancestors...we are more idle...this seems to be a problem...interesting now, we see Pepsi introducing a lower sugar beverage now...seems to me that government is taking an interest in helping society with their choices...I am mixed with this idea but do think the public has a voice in what they want...too bad the government will not understand the people's uncertainty about GMO's, the hormones and antibiotics used in raising cattle and chickens for example to name a few...but it seems that we are not as active...
I can't even begin to imagine what you must have eaten, lindsy. confused
