Engaging in a relationship

Best relationships of my life were my 3 engagements. I was married once and turned out to be really bad at it. (My brother described it as 3 arrests, 1 conviction).

I felt loved and valued, I did not feel trapped! It was great. Can't imagine ever being married again, and I know I am not the only one, quite a lot of marriage-phobes here. Still, you'd think there'd be a relationship status somewhere between just hanging out together, and chained to each other, in these days of complicated relationships.

Time for us CS experts to invent it?

Scottish law had a nice one, back in the days when there weren't a lot of priests available: live together for a year and a day, and you were considered handfast. Any kids would be legitimate, you were married in the eyes of the community, it was pretty much the Scottish equivalent of common-law marriage. But as that 366th day approached you could still panic and bolt for a month, then come back and start over (if he / she would take you back, of course rolling on the floor laughing)
I haven't been married (by choice) but I think that there shouldn't be a difference between a committed LTR & marriage - apart the major hassle when going separate ways. conversing
There's no way of defining a LTR, though, unless you buy a house together or something. Otherwise it is just keeping company and no way of knowing it that is a week, a year, or could end after the next holiday you book together, as that is as far as forward planning goes.

I am the teeny tiniest bit OCD, doesn't help. rolling on the floor laughing
Yes, you have to have something you built up and share together.

These days I like to do my own thing and not sure if it helps matters. confused
