Tante Emma
Once upon a time there were no supermarkets, but small shops in the centre of the towns and villages, often run by women and called Tante Emma Laden: Aunt Emma shop. Then these shops started to die at the same time when cars became available to most people.
It is not so that there are no shops at all any more in the town and village centres, but usually you won't find small shops with food, e.g.
Another reason are the regulations you have to meet, when running a shop and the rent you have to pay, while formerly the shop was in the same house where the owner lived.
So nowadays ALDI, LIDL, REAL, WALMART are a bit outside.
