Tante Emma

Once upon a time there were no supermarkets, but small shops in the centre of the towns and villages, often run by women and called Tante Emma Laden: Aunt Emma shop.
Then these shops started to die at the same time when cars became available to most people.
It is not so that there are no shops at all any more in the town and village centres, but usually you won't find small shops with food, e.g.
Another reason are the regulations you have to meet, when running a shop and the rent you have to pay, while formerly the shop was in the same house where the owner lived.

So nowadays ALDI, LIDL, REAL, WALMART are a bit outside.

That is also true!
Zoning. This neighborhood is not zoned for that business.
a butcher has to go to the big slaughterhouse in a nearby city, and may not put animals down....
so u may wonder why it worked formerly with more diversity and less control...
The whole purpose of zoning is to destroy small business and force commuters/consumers to use major chains for all products. It works well here. The butcher and fish and general store or hardware store shops of my youth disappeared over 50 years ago. Walmart rules. Lowes and Home Depot rule.

Younger folk today grow up without neighborhoods and don't even know it.
I loved our corner shops. They were always so friendly and the shop keepers knew everyone by name. I remember those scales etc. I remember our local shop when I was a kid and her name was Connie, can still remember her so well. Everything was in big jars too to weigh out.

I love remember happy days of childhood. daydream very happy
I remember around age 6 shoplifting 4 or 5 blueberries from the fruit (they had fresh veggies too) store, getting home 200 yards away and having my mom come out and whale me before giving me a few quarters to go back to Mr. Ed's store and pay for them. That was my introduction to the power of the telephone. rolling on the floor laughing
