HAPPY COAST GUARD DAY, YALL!! (Again!)
The United States' oldest continuously operating sea service...and smallest service...
turns 225 years old August 4, 2015!
Instituted as the Revenue Cutter Service August 4, 1790.
So...break out the goodies...
Toss the squids on the barbie
And let the festivities begin!!!
This Coast Guard Day blog is dedicated to
Captain Kwang Ping Hsu, USCG
He survived the Japanese Occupation of Nanking during WWII,
came to the U.S. with his family after the war,
became the first Chinese-born graduate of the Coast Guard Academy,
was a remarkable aviator,
and commanded the first U.S. military aircraft to land in China
after the Cold War. (A Coast Guard HC-130.)
I've heard that he passed a few years ago,
and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

There was, indeed, a Continental Navy during the Revolutionary War,
but it was disbanded after the war, and not re-established until well after
August 4, 1790, the date Congress created the Revenue Cutter Service -
forerunner of the USCG.
Those are the ones who couldn't pass the Coast Guard physical.
poor devils.
Mick, cut the cake without me. I have to go. Give the biggest piece to Pedal with that badge.
Enjoy guys.!!!!!
Much appreciated, Usha!
Sadly, that is probably true, Hans.
There's evidence something by another name, but essentially similar went on in post Spanish-American War Cuba.
And some parts of South America.
Today's coyote/illegal immigration system may have some similar aspects, also.
Difficult to say. They don't exactly advertise their actions.
Cheers To Yawl!
A celebration is in order...
Hey Lou, how 'bout some appropriate music for the event?
Could you put up that vid mentioned in the OP!
(Cool vid! IMNSHO )
It'd be a great day (week, actually) to be in Grand Haven, Michigan!
It's Congressionally recognized as "Coast Guard City, USA".
Much...MUCH Festivities
I qualify for membership in an actual military order!
Yes. Really!
"The Ancient Order Of The Pterodactyl"
Motto:
"Flying Since The World Was Flat!"
(Aka - Coast Guard Aviation Association)
Very cool Ray Ban Aviator-style shades.
It's really cool.
Thanks for finding it & putting it up!
ANY organization that features a giant prehistoric flying reptile
has just GOTTA be cool...right?
Lou seem pre-occupied.
Probably a long night...
Could you put up that CG Tribute vid mentioned in the OP?
The Coast Guard was the first service involved in aviation?
Yes. Really!
When the Wright Brothers were fooling around with their flying machines at Kitty Hawk, some of the guys from the local Lifesaving Service came over to give 'em a hand.
(Probably figured the boys were going to get themselves killed,
so might as well be there when the time came to pick up the pieces.)
Anyway, the Lifesaving Service was merged with the Revenue Marine in 1915 to form the USCG.
Sorry Mick. Was bit tied up. I found so many. But chose two , Hope it's the right.
I was thinking of the first one, Usha,
but including the lyrics was a great addition...
even if a bit outdated.
About late 1960's...
"So, here's the Coast Guard Marching Song,
We sing on land and sea..."
Was replaced by -
"We're always ready for the call!
We place our trust in Thee..."
Although both versions are sometimes heard (obviously).
It was formed in 1848,
& merged with the Revenue Cutter Service in 1915,
as noted above.
