This Coast Guard Day blog is dedicated to

Captain Kwang Ping Hsu, USCG

He survived the Japanese Occupation of Nanking during WWII,
came to the U.S. with his family after the war,
became the first Chinese-born graduate of the Coast Guard Academy,
was a remarkable aviator,
and commanded the first U.S. military aircraft to land in China
after the Cold War. (A Coast Guard HC-130.)

I've heard that he passed a few years ago,
and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Is the US Navy younger than the Coast Guard?wave
The operative word is CONTINUOUSLY operating service.
There was, indeed, a Continental Navy during the Revolutionary War,
but it was disbanded after the war, and not re-established until well after
August 4, 1790, the date Congress created the Revenue Cutter Service -
forerunner of the USCG.

cowboy
thumbs up Did not know it was disbanded.

Like to think the Civil War ended it.
There's evidence something by another name, but essentially similar went on in post Spanish-American War Cuba.
And some parts of South America.
Today's coyote/illegal immigration system may have some similar aspects, also.
Difficult to say. They don't exactly advertise their actions.

Did y'all know...
The Coast Guard was the first service involved in aviation?
Yes. Really!

When the Wright Brothers were fooling around with their flying machines at Kitty Hawk, some of the guys from the local Lifesaving Service came over to give 'em a hand.
(Probably figured the boys were going to get themselves killed,
so might as well be there when the time came to pick up the pieces.)
Anyway, the Lifesaving Service was merged with the Revenue Marine in 1915 to form the USCG. professor

Yeah I was gonna debate about the life saving crews, the guys going way back to the 16th century who would row out to ships in trouble and pull folks off. Agreed they were local folk and not nationally organized (so too for the first lighthouses of that era). But I always in my heart view them as the ancestors of the Coast Guard rather than the more fiscally driven and military Coast Watchers that came later.

Sorry Mick. Was bit tied up. bowing I found so many. But chose two , Hope it's the right.

I was thinking of the first one, Usha,
but including the lyrics was a great addition...
even if a bit outdated.

About late 1960's...

"So, here's the Coast Guard Marching Song,
We sing on land and sea..."

Was replaced by -

"We're always ready for the call!
We place our trust in Thee..."

Although both versions are sometimes heard (obviously).

cool
The U.S. Lifesaving Service grew out of local & private groups.
It was formed in 1848,
& merged with the Revenue Cutter Service in 1915,
as noted above.
