A House On An Island

Ever since I was a child, I wanted to live on an island, but if I must believe all these rumors about global warming, all islands will soon be joining Atlantis at the bottom of the ocean. Maybe I should buy a house on a hill next to the coastline. If those guys are right, I shall be on an island soon enough.idea

But I will require a sort of a time frame; there will be no point in dieing the day after my hill became an island. There are so many things to consider. I will want to build a jetty at the right spot for when the water finally arrives. Who knows, I may win the lotto before then and may need a place to park my yacht.grin

And maybe a bridge to connect my island to the mainland. It will be much easier to build it before the water arrives, but I will need to know the eventual level of the sea. It is ok if the people laugh at me. I read about a fellow who build a massive boat on dry ground, very far from any significant body of water. The people laughed at him, but his boat sailed.wow

I wonder how the rising oceans will affect the climate. I want to live on a tropical island, not an arctic wasteland. Eish, so many ifs and buts, maybe I must scrap the whole idea.roll eyes

Sure If you buy a top floor apartment in a high rise you may be able to park your boat outside the window in a few years. laugh
Hi,I hope you are well and still dreaming of that tropical island.I thought I could help you out there but alas my island despite having a bridge and being Ireland's largest,....is not a tropical one.
Nevertheless I wish you all the best with your dream.
oh catty catty catty! lol rolling on the floor laughing laugh rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing chatty cattylaugh rolling on the floor laughing ( absolutely nothing to do with the blog)laugh laugh laugh laugh
Hi Non, the question is still how much the oceans will rise. Johannesburg is 1700 meters above sea level. Will that be high enough?
laugh cheers wave
Hi Julie,
Don't worry, after the next polar shift your island may also be a tropical island. We are due for another polar shift any day now. That is if global warming does not win the race. laugh

Hi Kanacy,
You should not laugh, this is serious business. You also live in a coastal region. You better be looking for high ground.laugh

Hi Cattie, Tygerberg hill is for sale. It is probably larger than what you require but a very save bet.rolling on the floor laughing
Hi Bea,
Absolutely not. That is where everybody in the northern suburbs will be running to when the water start rising. My island will be covered with squatters!scold

laugh From now on Cat, you can start your new business to build more yachts for those who want survival in the water world. wink Then all the problems you concerned will be solved ... roll eyes
if so you need
SOrry for the wrong input,blushing

If so, u-boats needed ,or we only can be the food of fish before run up to Kilimanjaro... rolling on the floor laughing
Hi Phoenix
According to WWII statistics, u-boats are just canned shark food. I wonder if sharks carry can openers with them.doh

Well, I live up on top of a hill about 300 meters from the beach.
When I bought the house 15 years ago I was going up and down on my bike and on foot with no trouble at all.
Now I can hardly manage the last part of the hill, let alone pushing the bike all the way up!sigh

As you can see, I have a beautiful panoramic view.

According to the latest statistics about the oceans rising, I wonder if before I die I will have the beach at my doorstep? dunno applause banana
Hi Red,
You have a great weekend too!

By the way, with all the expected water, the moon may be in trouble too while it is 'down'.laugh

Hi Min
My house is also on a hill. About 6 km from the sea. The nearest decent beach is about double that distance. I last rode a bicycle when I was still in school. It is unlikely that I would attempt this one with a bicycle and it is not as high or as steep as your hill.grin

Howdy Cat,
Im just back from my afternoon nap yawn

If you get this to work let me know wont open in my browser,
It may help you. I have seen maps of Ireland before and I have to say,
Its a big improvement. so long as parliament gets washed away then every thing else can only get better for a while.

Hi Non,
Yep it is working. Everything below 216 feet above the current sea level is gone. Southern Africa ain't doing too bad. I see all that is left of Denmark is a little island.help
laugh cheers wave
Hi Angel.
Islands are expensive but hills are useless real estate.laugh

chatty catty, Guyana is not an islandrolling on the floor laughing laugh although we are a part of caricom( caribbean community) we are not located in the caribbean, we are an actual country and not an islandgrin so im safelaugh laugh laugh
Hi Kandacy
I know where Guyana is. I only said you are also living in a coastal region. Continent or no continent, everything below 216 feet above sea level will go under. And that will include a large chunk your country's real estate. You better run for the hills.rolling on the floor laughing
hug wave
hey chatty catty we are actually above sea levellaugh rolling on the floor laughing laugh im glad u know where Guyana iswine smart felladancing grin i wanna come to South Africa, i hear its the most mineral rich country in the entire world is that true??dunno confused banana
Kandacy,
I don't know if South Africa if the richest in minerals, but we sure have vast riches under our soil. Rich enough to have caused two wars against the British empire.
hug wave
okay,Catty i would sure love to see South Africa someday!angel peace cool dancing wine
Hi Kandacy,
Well, you better come sooner than later. The country is under poor management and some people foresee that we will be no better of than Zimbabwe in a few years.frustrated

My BFF's husband is a civil engineer who travels the world advising on billion dollar bridges and he says they are not factoring in huge rises in water levels.

I live near an estuary and seriously heavy-duty six-foot walls have been built along the shoreline so I am fairly hopeful I won't wake up to the downstairs a foot deep in water ... uh oh however thanks to global climate change I MIGHT be living in a tropical paradise one of these days? Believe it when I see it, we had the coldest winter on record just a few years ago and global warming doesn't seem very interested in Scotland.

Was your island pretty small? I always fancied one just the right size for a small village ... a ferry to the mainland ... and me of course queen of all I surveyed. Woulda been nice cool
Cat,

so many lovely Islands in Philippines but I would prefer to live in the farm...but not to far from the shore either...quiet, fresh foods, fresh air, nice people....ahhh BLISS!grin
Hi Biff,
At half a degree rise per century, unless if there is a sudden escalation, it may take sometime before the polar caps are melted away. Mind you, we also had a cold winter. So much for global warming. I think we're going to wait a bit for high tide.laugh

Hi Crazy,
We cannot count to much on the existing islands. Remember they are preparing to join Atlantis.laugh
hug wave
Hey Cat, I do like your pic but it makes you look weary and a little bored with your blog, whereas your other one makes you seem keenly interested. Which makes me realize my own pic is downright RUDE, looking off to the side rolling on the floor laughing

Changing pics. TGIF.
Hi Biff
That was a 'skelm' pic my father took while I was relaxing a bit after lunch. Too much wine and not enough song.grin

Cat,

I'll build a house made of plastics and light weight woods then...laugh
Hi Luke
I had a look at the projected water levels. We'll do fine in SA. We'd still have part of the peninsula. Somewhat smaller but still here. Kwazulu will also lose some ground. It fact, Africa as a whole will survive. Some smallish losses in West and North Africa. The southern part of the USA and Europe will suffer. Florida, Holland and Denmark will disappear from our maps. Russia too will lose a lot of real estate on its northern shores.uh oh

It was like that about 34 million years ago so were heading that way again.laugh
cheers wave
Hi Crazy
Just make sure you have a 215 ft anchor rope. That is how far it will rise.laugh
hug wave
and where am I supposed to stash that long rope while I'm waiting for my plastic house to float?laugh
Cat,

let it melt...bring it on...yay

Hi Crazy
OK, let's start the fires. Scientists estimate that if we burn all the fossil fuels on the planet at once it will release enough carbon dioxide into the atmosphere to melt all ice on earth in about 5000 years. What are we waiting for? Let's get going.rolling on the floor laughing
hug wave
Cat,

are you insane? I still need to find my soul mate here!!!doh When that plastic house floats at least I've got someone who will keep me warm!professor
Hi Catfoot,
How have you been doing? Hope all is fine. hug
And Catfoot, don't believe in rumors, pleeeaaaasse! grin

wave
Crazy,
that is no problem. It will be just you and I remaining. We won't have any difficult decisions to make.rolling on the floor laughing
