The truth about Muslims in America

The truth about Muslims in America is perhaps surprising -- but not in the way Trump and his supporters might think.

A look at polls and studies conducted in the last few years shows that Muslims have been crucial in helping law enforcement find terror suspects in the United States. Many have served in the military protecting the country against terrorists. And in many ways, they're a lot like other everyday Americans.

Here's the reality of Muslims in America -- and how it smashes stereotypes:

They are a minuscule portion of the U.S. population
It's difficult to come by hard numbers because the U.S. Census doesn't collect religious data. But the fear of Muslims taking over and imposing Sharia law is unfounded. By some estimates, Muslims make up less than 1% of the U.S. adult population. By 2050, their numbers will grow -- to 2.1%. Of all the Muslims in America, 63% are exactly the kind Trump wants banned -- immigrants.

They're better educated than most Americans
U.S. Muslims have the second-highest level of education among major religious groups in the country; Jews have the highest. And a greater proportion of them have college degrees than the general U.S. population.

They have more gender equality
While in many parts of the Muslim world, women are confined to second-class status, that's not the case among American Muslims. Virtually all of them, 90%, agree that women should be able to work outside the home. American Muslim women hold more college or postgraduate degrees than Muslim men. And they are more likely to work in professional fields than women from most other U.S. religious groups.

They've been here since the birth of the nation ...
Scholars estimate about a quarter to a third of the Africans brought to the United States as slaves were Muslims. Most were then forced to convert to Christianity.

... and they're not just clustered in big cities
American Muslims live in cities big and small all across the United States. The first mosque built in America was in, of all places, Ross, North Dakota, back in 1929.

They're as religious as Christians ...
The general perception of Muslims has one thing right: Most Muslims are very religious. About half say they attend the weekly Friday prayers. But that makes them similar to Christians: About 70% of Christians say religion is important in their lives, and about 45% go to a weekly service.

... but they're not as dogmatic as they are portrayed
Much has been made about fundamentalist Muslims and their strict interpretation of the Quran. But most American Muslims are different. A Pew religious landscape survey found that 57% of American Muslims say there is more than one way to interpret Islam's teachings. A similar number say many different religions can lead to eternal life.

There have been Muslims involved in terrorism ...

From September 11, 2001, until the end of 2014, 109 Muslim-Americans plotted against targets in the United States. And terrorism by Muslim-Americans killed 50 in the same time period. Contrast that with the deaths from other mass shootings just last year: 136 -- more than twice as many as all the deaths from 13 years of Muslim-American terrorism.

... but they've also spoken out against it

After every terrorist attack at home and abroad, the refrain rises, "Where is the Muslim condemnation?" American Muslims have spoken out -- and done much more. A Duke University study found more terrorism suspects and perpetrators were brought to the attention of law enforcement by members of the Muslim-American community than were discovered through U.S. government investigations. And a Pew survey found that roughly half of U.S. Muslims say their religious leaders aren't speaking out enough against Islamic extremism.

wave Hi! Socrates

My Friend Who Is A Caucasian/ Female. She is a Muslim!

And she once told me that! There are a few Caucasian Muslims, in the United States of America. And I can't remember the percentage! But I believe she said that there are around 30 to 40% Of White Americans that are Muslims too. I haven't look it up on Google yet. Anyway! Here in America. There are many different races of people that are in the Muslim Religion. Not just the Middle Easterns and some Black Americans here in the USA.

Now! My Caucasian Friend.
She have told me some sad things about how she feel about what's going on here. And she is also afraid for her life. She also is having bad dreams. Which leads her in fear!
Thinking that someone is going to come in her apartment and kill her. Just for being a Muslim. And she also think that! If Donald Trump becomes President of this Country. He is going to have them to leave this country. Which I told her!

Don't Always Believe What You Here! ( Entertainment/ Show Business)

Besides! He can not do that.

Plus! She is a citizen here in the usa.

End Of Story!___ drinking
@Socrates Thanks for your sensible blog! ;thumbsup:
Socrates sorry but half the time I do not beleive statistics, but if even half of the surveys are true then good.

I do see many problems ahead for every country really moping sadly.

For when displaced people who truly need looking after until they get on their feet take housing away, medical and funds away from citizens then trouble starts.

These things must be done to help these people but in a sensible way (I can hear words in my heart saying and pigs will fly) That is for every community around world, its a human nature thing then realy evil people will exploit and cause more disruption for their own ends as ISIS has flourished under these conditions.

How to help I do not know, maybe nations getting together to halt the discord that is so bad in some countries. If that did happen would these countries be said to lord it over other countries.moping

I wish more discusions could take place openly about how to solve problem in a humane way.

I myself believe that helping refugees in camps near their own country is best, then try to go in and solve countries problems or help anyway. These poor people could then live and go back to own culture and country. I shake my head again at conditions these people have to live in.

I can see what Merkel tried to do but she had not thought it through and countries are now flooded with displaced people and also evil people undercover of being refugees.

So yes world discusions on helping not pointing finger it has got to be done before anything changes.

I hope I am still on this earth to see steps in that direction.

wishing you well my friend teddybear

Nice blog...a positive one...wine

I think Trump wants to ban Muslims coming into the US...for a time...not forever but his tactics have left a bad taste for most that do not want to fear Muslims...as you have stated that most are actually quite peaceful...and well educated...

A good counter blog to those that are blogging about fearing Muslims and generalize about them... wine

Thanks for your comment.
American society has benefitted from the Muslim contribution and that should be respected.
Zman

63 percent of Muslims in America are immigrants. They are Americans who have contributed to the development of American society and are continuing to do so.

According to Trump's plan, most, if not all of them would have been banned from entering America since “he wants to ban non American Muslims from entering” (your words).
Miclee

How do muslims feature in your comment?

By the way, the "Brigitte Gabriel matter" was already dealt with in a previous blog on CS blogland.

Thanks for the compliment.

Yes! I Know.
The tears that ran down here face! Was so sad to see. But! She sit and shared her feelings about it. I mostly just sit and listen! She needed someone to talk too. We had never talked about any of it before. She said that she been holding it in for a while now. She is not wearing her Muslims clothes anymore! And I did ask her why? She said that in her town! People not even socializing with her anymore nor even speak to her.

It's True!
America doesn't know who to trust! But still at the same Time. You can't trust anyone period! No matter what their race nor Religion is either way.

Here in America! People kill people. In many races! Not just the blacks. Google it for yourself! In fact. We have TV. Show here that tells a lot about it. Example: The ID Channel/ network, OWN Network. ( Snapped) and a few other programs/ Documentary based on the things that happen with people here. Not just on the News Station. But! I don't know if your country get those Programs stations. That is why I said to Google It!

Anyway! Over All.
It is very sad what many countries is dealing with this Issi stuff. Many of people is being killed by them too!
And I don't believe that all Muslims, is involved in it. Its just
Ashame! Sad and horrible.
Zman, sorry to confirm (very much so because we are schoolmates and what he says is NOT hoerican Muslims Mr. Trump has opined that he favors creation of an FBI database with mandatory registration of all of that religion. Adolf would love him.

Thanks for further information re your friend.

I agree that the situation you have described is quite sad.
Ken

Thanks for your input.
Backward Muslims entering America now don't transform into advanced Muslims by virtue of being in America. They've obviously done some extremely strict cherrypicking in the past to give America the few good Muslims that there are.

European Muslims are a better reflection of what Muslims are like in general because we've let common lot in and not just the cream off the top. The equivalent in America for Muslims in Europe are the African-Americans - a subsisting and highly criminalised underclass.
Squirrel

"The equivalent in America for Muslims in Europe are the African-Americans - a subsisting and highly criminalised underclass."

I think you are treading on very dangerous ground in making such a statement.

Enough Said!

Excerpt from link you quoted re Trump and muslims:

"Do they like me in Indonesia?" he asked.

"Yes, highly," Novanto said. "Thank you very much."

"I think we like him because he's also invested in Indonesia."

"I think what he said is fine. What he said is 'illegal immigrants,' he has no problem with the other people, with foreign people, with immigrants as long as it's legal,"

"So, Obama is our friend. Donald Trump is also our friend."

In politics, there are strange bedfellows.
Novanto is a politician. So is Trump.
Novanto says he thinks Indonesians like Trump because he has investments in their country.
Note, it is not related to his views on Muslims on the whole.
Generally, the views expressed by politicians do not reflect the views of the people, but rather it reflects their own vested interests.

Trump's statement about banning all muslims was in reference to all muslims, not illegal immigrants as Novanto said.
It is ridiculous to speak about banning illegal immigrants from entering the U.S. since they are already there.

Perhaps, you should speak about the views of U.S. muslims on Trump since the blog is about them.
Wow Trump's in trouble now uh oh he's upset Adele by using her music at rallies without permission, he really shouldn't mess with her, I suspect her fanbase is far larger than his laugh in any case she's a big girl & a wap round the head with her handbag is really going to hurt rolling on the floor laughing
@socrates, good that the media published it and the police caught the perpetrators and charged them without any cover up or taking sides of any groups. Are there any non-moslems groups after that yelled to victims (moslems) "It has nothing to do with us"? roll eyes
