Is old fashioned romance dead?

These days the internet and mobile technology has allowed us to meet people all over the world, messaging, Skype and these internet dating sites have become normal even to those of us over 50.

I do miss the days when I would have to ask permission from a girl’s father, getting dressed up and taking her out for a meal, sending flowers the next day even if the date didn’t go well. Cards and letters? a thing of the past.

Instant messaging is great, but so is talking on the phone, hearing someone’s voice, listening to what they have to say can still give me a warm feeling.

Meeting someone in person for the first time after messages and phone calls should be exciting, the days building up to the meeting are full of nervous worries “will she like me” “will I like her”........Normally these worries are silly but it’s how it should be.

What would be your ideal first date? And do you think that technology has taken away the romance?

the ideal date....the man who shows up? laugh

Ideally, no phones, lots of relaxed and interesting conversation which would lead to a second date.

Those were the dayscheering cheering
Thoughtful and meaningful gestures. thumbs up
The last first-date I had was 2 weeks after we actually met for the first time at a group CS meet.

For the first date, he whisked me off to a hotel for a romantic weekend. heart wings

We chatted, laughed and had fun for the entire weekend.

Technology can bring people together if used properly.
Lucy..No phones a must.

Molly..That was very romantic

Redex..Yes they were, but not gone forever.

Biff..As always logical and good comments, meeting in person is a definate.
Molly, true 'nuff. I do keep forgetting there are nasties and every now and then I run into a wall of spite and jealousy and phew, then I remember that virtual has its downside. Sick puppies.

Most people are nice and some are awesome!
Judging by the comments received, The old fashioned Romance still exists but with the enhancement of technology.

A lot of you women mention romantic times you have had in the past and I hope you get more of this in the future.

The general consensus is that these days there should be a face to face meeting prior to any date, I agree with this, its safer.
Map, I think its not so important what is done on a date but who you are with. So I must say I don't have an ideal first date.
Min,

I think you will enjoy a night of dancing very much...two fun people togetherbouquet

You must be joking CH ..he's not my type and I'm not into line dancing either.scold

For me a first romantic date is meeting the man of my dreams on the beach on a sunny day ..gazing into each others eyes and knowing he's the one.

Then he sends me a hand written invitation to a beach picnic which I can't refuse.
He has brought my favourite wine..flowers and even candles..and there's a full moon out that night...

Then....then. ..and then. .

OK, Map, I'm out of herelaugh
Probably a stroll in a park with a take out lunch(daylight hours)

After lunch maybe seek out an outdoor ice cream parlor in which to get some ice cream sit and get to more acquainted.

Afterwards, have it end where he takes me home and walks me up to my door and we tell one another on how much we enjoyed the day.

Then I wake up and it was only a dream.moping
Ish..A good point.."its not what you do on the date, its who you are with"...you never know a date maybe just around the corner..

Crazyheart..You spent a lot of time on the "blind dates" and while working!...must have a cool job.

2B..Fancy a picnic on the beach? I will bring the basket of food and wine.
You gotta go with the flow!

We used to be able to work on cars with lots of room. Not anymore.

We used to buy gas for 25 cents a gallon but the rich boys society upped the price and now we pay way more than we should.

That's the way of the world.

Wanna be different? Than do it the way you want and if it's the old way just find someone near! Those rules never change.
Interesting ! (:
Don't worry (; the old romance still there it's upon the people whom willing to drop off their phones for a solemn night .walking to the beach sand etc.
I actually missed those too .just came back here to open any messages for me . currently enjoying walks and hangouts whether there's chance in old fashion way (; enduring ..
Don't worry not just you almost all people wanting to bring back old times, they must be cruel if they say .No ! Smile (:
