Hostels vs. fancy hotels.

I recall with fond memories the days of my globe trotting. Anyone else remember all those youth hostels, where for less than the price of plastic flip flops, one had a safe harbor in a strange city, and a launching point for clued and value oriented exploration? The real value in these places was in the ability to get to know others and to benefit enormously from each other's travel experience. One can get some of this by reading The Lonly Planet travel guides, but the fun of commeraderie is absent. Totally different world from staying in fancy hotels. Sadly, hosteling is a little different now a days, but one still do some of it as we did a few decades ago. Same for hitch hiking, no? Aa.

I have done both fancy hotels and hostelling in my life.
I like both for different reasons.
Hostelling is great if you are on a budget and enjoy meeting lots of different people from across the globe.
Nice hotels are better for a romantic weekend, for comfort and pampering, especially if there is a spa in the hotel smitten
I mainly remember sleeping in them with my rucksack as my pillow and getting out fast the next day. So much to see and do. Hitch hiking, that was the talking time, you paid your ride with conversation. Last time I gave a hiker a ride he went straight to sleep. Things have changed. confused
Right you are, Dome. Common to see hitch hikers daily here and in Europe.years ago. Now only rarely. But in other places it still occurs. Oz and NZ for instance. And in the PRC, folks love to show off their English. Times have changed indeed. Thanks.
I was married to a British woman and we traveled a lot all over the USA, Canada, Ireland and England. I had more fun, met more interesting people and more unique situations in hostels then in hotels with her. One trip to Canada we were in a hostel where I was in a room with 4 Swedish woman that didn't mind an older gent being the room as they changed... wow and the next day we were in another co-ed hostel room with ... OMG, I was blushing the whole time and my wife kept whispering to me "Stop drooling..." blushing

It's too bad we are no longer married. We had some great times and definitely prefer the hostel over the more expensive hotel any day.
The mainland Chinese hate to be called 'PRC' laugh and because of that, we the 'outside' Chinese, especially in Malaysia and Singapore called them 'MIC'.......'Made In China' rolling on the floor laughing
"Sadly, hosteling is a little different now a days, but one still do some of it as we did a few decades ago. "

Please, can you tell more about the difference? I am very curious, as I don't know how it was in the past and I would love to compare. Thank you.
