Ian..I have found Spain to be perfect for me, It does depend where you want to live, on the coast property and the cost of living are higher than inland.

Pros: Good weather, friendly people, cost of living, laid back way of life, very beautiful women!

Cons: None in my experience, but knowing some Spanish is a must.

Value for money, depends where you live, My town for example has cheap properties, for example a 4 bed apartment overlooking the town square for 24000 euros. Food is very cheap, and fresh.
That's it...I'm off to Spain
If I was going to go to Spain, I'd avoid the plains. I've heard thats where most of the rain falls.
Ha. Interesting! We ARE checking out Portugal as a possible, going there end April for a look-see, and I was saying only the other day that no-one ever talks about it. Thanks, boxer.
Excuse me Map, just want to know if that €24000 for buying the property? That sounds very cheap. I am curious.
Apartment though. Body corporate fees, insurances, and sinking funds etc., can make the purchase cost seem like a great deal. You could buy a unit in cairns for about $70 000, but these other costs would be $6000 or $7000 per year.
Usha..yes 24000 euros..there are properties for a lot less, if you want gardens and a pool then from 60 000 euros...Can have mine for 180k lol
Far away from tourist...and possibly beits....1-2 bed and in an area where I can just ride with great roads, scenery and views...beaches aren't my thing..open fields..mountains and Olive trees more me
@map...so what chances does a grit have with Spanish ladies...I've heard they find us boring ..no blood.
Some women here are stunning..I hear they are hot blooded and up for it...who knows
The big thing here is altitude professor Spain is basically a giant plateau, or the plain as Pat puts it laugh most of Spain sits at around 1000 mtrs, with the major towns in dips, inland (higher) get very hot in Summer & can be cold in winter, near the coast (lower) is more moderate, the difference is about 1 degree per 100 mtrs, therefore on the coast Map's quoted flat would cost from around 150k to over a million depending on exactly where, from what you say about riding & mountains the alpujarras, just inland from here would suit you, all the roads up there were rebuilt with EEC grants back in the day, you can drive for 30 minutes & not see a sole, but you're only around 40 minutes from the coast & similar to the ski resorts.
Rain, you can pick how much you want, Almeria in the south east corner gets virtually none, and has Europe's only desert, the further west, toward the Atlantic you get steadily more, inland can get loads in winter laugh
Travel, as an expat being able to get back to the UK can be an advantage, flights from say Malaga to London\Liverpool etc can be booked in advance for as little as £4, normally expect to pay around £35, due to the just over 2 hour flight time & the number of flights per day it is possible to go the UK for lunch & be back in time for dinner, done that got the T shirt.
Well..this years ride in Spain will make my mind up....I'm use to 50deg hear so I'm sure Spain will feel like Ireland to me
Spanish women won't go for the typical alcoholic toothless brit, they like a refined gent.

For Biking my area is good, few good get togethers in my local bar, plenty of bikes and music, quiet roads.
I must pass by...
Spain is a lovely country to live, fantastic social activities. Its like a constant holiday. The best you can do is check it out yourself. Every area you visit is diferent. You can find great beaches, snow, natural parks, cities. Depends what you prefer.
South for holidays/retiring , North for living/working.
