"PAYING THE FERRY MAN"(2)

So Long A Time Ago...When Bridges Were Very Few...And You Wanted To Get To The Other Side Of The River..You Had 3 Choices

1)You Could Stay Where You Were

2)You Could Swim To The Other Side

3)Or...You Could Pay The "Ferry Man"...(And Hed Take You Across)
It Could Either Be A Couple Of "Ferry Men"...With Long Staffs..As They Would Push The "Raft Looking Contraption" Across By Hitting The Bottom Of The River(From The Front Of The "Raft"..And Walking To The Back
Or
Some "Ferry Men"...Had a Long Rope Or Cable Attached To Both Sides Of The River(And They Would Pull On The Rope)And Little By Little...They Would Get You To Other Side
Of Course...Using Good Business Ethics
They Had To Be Paid In Advance
And These Were The Toll Prices For Some Areas In The Early 1800s

1 Person...(On Foot?)......................6 Cents
1 Person And 1Horse?.......................12 Cents
1 Cart And 1 Horse And 1Person?..........31 Cents
A 2 Horse WagonAnd1Person?.................43 Cents
A 4 Horse Wagon And1Person?.....1 Dollar And 6 Cents
A 4 Horse Carriage And1Person?..............81 Cents
1 Oxen And 1 Person?.......................16 Cents

And... Unfortunately
If The River Went Higher Than 6 Feet?...............(The Rates Were Doubled)
For It Was More Work Struggling Against The Rivers Flow
Oh Yeah...One More Thing About The Prices

If You Could Prove You Were Going to Church
The Price Was.............Free!!

We still have hand drawn ferries. One going over the Orange river to Namibia and one over the Breede river...big enough to carry a couple of cars so have some helpers to pull it across. Paying in advance still applies. laugh

you forgot the ferry woman , theres a sheep and cattle station in this district named ofter one , "wakawahine" , waka being the canoe and wahine refering to the woman . The river could be forded and was reguarly , one station drove a mob of cattle over it , quicksand caught the owner ,his horse and a shepard who tried to help him. Low level bridge was built after that putting the woman out of work . Bridge was too low level and flooded , more people were lost off that , such is progress .

In Holland not only the ferryman needs to be paid but every bridge that they have to open to let boats get through they have to pay money. It is paid in a wooden shoe hanging on a rope, even today
