Would you buy me a coffee?
This is a research question. Would you buy me a coffee for a couple of hours of conversation, with me doing all the talking? I say conversation - one-sided gossip, really. You could end the conversation after 10 minutes, or stay the distance. Your choice. I’d be wherever you chose, no travel involved on your part.Blog edited, and now switched to a discussion of coffee generally
I want to launch a new book at less than the price of a cup of Starbucks coffee and wondered if I could use that as a pitch. Prolly not ...
In 2014 a Starbucks Tall Brewed Coffee would have cost $2 in the States, £1.15 in the UK, 410 yen in Japan, 27.50 Hong Kong dollars, 10 Chinese renminbi. Probably hasn’t changed much since 2014. I couldn’t find the price in South Africa, would I be right in thinking around R20 for a refillable cup?
I absolutely love that CS is so reactive. You guys ROCK.

BTW what DOES a decent cup of coffee cost in your part of the world? Euros, Australian dollars, etc?
:shutting up now: :no, really:
'-)
when I'm listening.
Gossip? What kind of gossip?
You could give me coffee prices in Switzerland AND Mallorca, a left and a right, ooh!
Just kidding.....keep away from politics...and anything really intelligent and meaningful....and i'm your gal.... ....
Going away. Will be back. Please, though, keep commenting.
$1.50tx in.
Oh by the way you could shut me up any time. We'll pick up where we left off when you're ready.
And now I really am going. back soon
The point is that the pre-publication price, for pre-orders, will be the lowest price which can be charged on Amazon - the equivalent of 99c US, plus local tax.
I wondered if I could pitch marketing on that basis and then I thought - ask CS!
So much for the coffee idea
Now I like flavoured coffee, its either added in grounding or I can buy bottles of flavour. I like rich blend with choc flavour or vanila, at xmas the shop does a good one with spices. I only drink one coffee a day so like a good tasy one.
Arabica, Beans ground for each cup, an expensive barista machine will brew the best.
Purist I was that when I was born, but have lived a little bit since with flavoured coffee and straight coffee too.
Sadly there are ever burgeoning numbers of "published" (novellas if you will) seriously threatening the future of the true art of writing and the respect behind the profession.
I'm glad publishing has technologically advanced, pushing more writers work into the mainstream, but not everyone who thinks they can write, can write. As you understand, its truly an art form that takes education and just plain hard work. I know you are one of those artists and I would love to read one of your novellas...but telling me it costs less than the price of a cup of Starbucks would make me wonder why the comparison.
I don't read a book because its cheap. I read it because the content strongly draws or interests me. The price alone isn't enough bait. I can easily find something to read on the Internet that will cost me nothing at all, including free stories by hungry writers hoping for exposure.
Interest me in your book first, but not by putting it in the dollar store's selection. MAKE ME REALLY WANT TO READ IT, and charge me the appropriate price for the product. When you price things cheaply, people think they must be cheap in value.
But that's mho. True, we are all looking for a bargain...if I love what you are selling, and it is offered at a deal, I MIGHT grab it, but not because it was selling for the price of a cup of coffee.
I'd need to read a good sample of the content online before I would pay even the .99 because of the aforementioned publishing pitfalls. (I am assuming this is an electronic book. If it was a print edition, then you would need to add shipping and other costs.)
