Proper English

What has happened to the art of being able to spell correctly, including using proper punctuation and capitalization? frustrated Having been a secretary for 30 years and owning my own home-based business doing medical transcription, I do quite a bit of "correcting" the wording of the physician's grammar, it is essential that I know how to spell and construct sentences correctly. doh I understand the concept of instant messaging, (which I am not talking about, I do not abbreviate even there), except for an occasional "LOL or brb". I am not even talking about the occasional misspelled word, I'm speaking about the emails, postings and blogs, where a person actually has time to think about what they want to say. It really sets my teeth on edge to see such awful spelling and wording.

So many of the blogs I have tried to read make me believe the person is completely ignorant or lazy. There are many ways to say just about anything, especially when it comes to s*xual content, without being just plain rude, crude and disgusting. What attracts my attention even more than what a man looks like, is what his writing "says" about him. If he actually takes the times to put some thought and ideas into his emails and blogs, I will always want to continue discussions with him, including probably wanting to meet. But when I receive emails that make me have to play "twist" games with the wording, to understand what he's saying, I stop and email back, "thanks, but no thanks".

yawn I have received several emails from men who stated on their profiles that they have "some education" or high degree, yet their writing is just horrendous.very mad

I am not, by any means, a perfectionist; my home is not "eat off the floor" clean, but I do take pride in where I live, whether or not I have company over. This is something that my parents taught me was the right thing to do, along with taking pride in how you dress (guys, wearing your pants around your knees is not classy, just looks stupid), and instilling in me a love for words, using words to convey so many emotions, thoughts and ideas. Again, I don't expect Pulitzer prize type of writing, just basic priciples would be wonderful.

The same goes for when people have differences of opinion..... when people are unable to use words to adequately defend their position, they resort to showing their ignorance by name calling, belittling and insulting comments. Talk about the decline of a civilization.

I may be the first to agree with you on the use of the English language. I seem to notice it with men more so where they will write a few words about themselves and the diction is all wrong not to mention the spelling. That leaves me to try and figure out what it is they want to say. Whether it is laziness or use of the internet shortcuts that has become so popular, it gets under my skin.

I agree that some of the blogs are hard to fathom so I just skip over them. I have never been comfortable with the shortcuts in spelling and poor use of grammar. I did well in English where writing was very important in college. It was after that proper grammar and spelling became important to me. I do find myself judging men according to their spelling and grammar skills. We all make mistakes, but then that is all you read. I am not saying I am so high above them, but I would like to be able to communicate with them on an intellectual level or have to spell even the simpliest words for them.
lol hey that's simple issue's
don't harp on the small stuff laugh
Dear Pyepye

I cannot agree with you more on this issue!
I noticed you said that you were a medical typist.
I have been in the field for 9 years, both histopath and radiology.

Could you perhaps give me a few agencies there in the US
that may be able to assist me. I would like to eventually leave
SA.

Kind Regards
Claudia

To Chillichow - Hi there. Most of the "companies" I know about are online. You may want to check out the following:

TranscriptionMatters.com
Contract-transcription.com
Net Transcripts - this is a completely law enforcement transcription website. From the blogs, there hasn't been one negative comment from anyone. I'm hoping to start typing for them in the next few weeks. They do require a $55.00 payment from people before going to work for them, but after you pass their testing and complete so many hours of typing, you can apply for the $55 fee to be refunded.

I don't have much background for histopath or radiology. I have done some radiology, but not a lot. Most of my work deals with letters to other physicians, general H&Ps.

Please stay in touch and let me know how you are doing. My best wishes and kindest regards from Michigan, USA.

pyepye56 You're quite correct in what you say, however, you don't seem to allow for the differences in educational standards.

I do remember when I was in my late teens, watching a Rugby match on TV with my father. We were both engrossed in the match to the extent that for the most part we ignored each others comments on the Referee. I resented a decision he made so much so that I inadvertenly let fly with the 'F' word. At the half time, as my father went to the kitchen he handed me a Thesarus and simply said "Read that, you'll find a whole lot of new words in there to replace the one you just used!!" He was right, though I think he may have regretted it.rolling on the floor laughing

Perhaps part of the problem with the English language today is that people don't have the time to read, and therefore their language and spelling skills become weaker. Newspapers are not on my list of recommended reading, as it appears that to be a Journalist, it seems that one must not be able to spell.
