False Perceptions

After spending more than ½ my life in Africa I went to Britain, Shortly after arriving I attended a job interview with a panel of 4 interviewers.

There was a woman who started off by asking in a very slow patronizing voice if I had been scared of the elevator, I replied that yes I had been but was amazed at the openings in the wall with glass in them; she replied that “I suppose you don’t have windows in your mud houses”.

I have also had people say “but you are white, we thought all Africans were dark skinned” and the popular ”how do you cope with all the wild animals”.

What are your perceptions of Africa, and have you been asked stupid questions about where you live?

Funny, no-one ever patronized me in any way for being SAfrican. Also never heard of hippos eating anyone (biting them in half in a bad-tempered way, sure, but then they spit you out, they are vegetarian) but I've led a very sheltered life snooty

More than once, to be fair, I've noticed someone wandering round a general office here looking puzzled because they were told to watch out for the South African and aren't expecting a redhead to sneak up behind them and pounce grin

I get asked some pretty stupid questions about Scotland, though. roll eyes
Would they be happier if you blackened your face, Biff?laugh

What do they ask about Scotland?

Apart from deep fried everythinggrin
I suspect they would. laugh I'd be easier to spot in a Scottish office than I am right now, for starters.

Stupid questions about Scotland would be a blog hijack scold
No it wouldn't be.
That is the last question Map asked on his blog professor
My perception of Africa is that it is dangerous to live there, lots of killings and people have to live behind walls and security systems.

Diverse country with modern cities and poor rural areas.
Flies.....
Nope, you're thinking of Australia, where the "g'day mate" is said through barely-parted lips and clenched teeth to stop the flies swarming in and choking you to death.

(There is friendly rivalry on many levels between SA and Australia but we concede them to be the lords of the flies)
Hi.. I can relate
Oh you are from Belize yea it's in the Caribbean but also in central America.. Is the water safe there to use..? Ugh

What was the plan.. Bring your foreign water to drink and shower with? Lol..

Can we be truly honest in self-description? This is my attempt. And to ensure it has some degree of truth, I’ve asked a female friend to give her opinion also. So here goes :
