Electricity

My power went off this morning because a rather strong little rain storm came through and
did something to the wires.
Well, that made me think, oh good, I can do some of those little jobs around here that I've
been putting off.
That's when I realized how much trouble I could be in if the lights don't come back on like so
many are talking about on the internet.
Everything around here is somehow electric, even my water. My pressure system is electric.
My stove and refrigerator are electric. Everything in my wood shop is electric, except my old
broom, and you can only sweep so much.
Time to do some serious thinking, I think....
What do YOU think?

I have a wood/coal range for backup hot water and cooking. For lighting, kerosene lanterns as a backup.
Refrigerator, radio, TV, computer etc I can run from a car battery using a power inverter if need be. Have wood burner and gas for house heating.
thumbs up
Hey Alan....sounds like you're all set to go.

I better pull my head out of my behind and do something.
viking don't you have a generator?
We are very dependent on electricity, that's for sure.

However, I have a gas cooker, gas central heating and a solid fuel stove, so I'd be fed and warm at least grin
CC....a generator might save the day.
I've lived with off grid systems & systems that had off grid backup.
It's very comforting, no doubt about it. happy place

The extent to which our civilization is dependent on electricity, and thus vulnerable, is frightening...

Something that would've simply produced spectacular auroras 200 years ago, would (will?) be a civilization killer due to technological achievement.

Kinda ironic.

We get along fine with a generator and one solar panel and gas for cooking and showering. Should have invested in more batteries and a better converter as we can't use the freezer with what we have. Not going to stay off the grid as it is a bit of a nuisance to start the generator just to have a shower. Love not having an electricity bill but it is really more convenient to have electricity when you need it.
