Retirement - 30? 70?
They keep moving the goalposts. At this rate I will be 102 when I can finally totter off to a well-earned rest.If I promise cross-my-heart I will only claim a pension for a maximum of 10 years, could I quit work now?
I looked up retirement age in various countries - according to Wiki, it is currently 66 for both men and women in the US - in China women can retire as young as 50. Some countries as late as 68, some jobs (like the armed forces) much earlier, some jobs, like judges or cardinals, 75-ish.
Not everyone wants to retire.
Some want to pack it in at 50-something with a sigh of relief.
Some want to become US president at 70-something (both candidates were over 70).
Hands up those who love their jobs so much they would be happiest dying at their desk
Huge chunks of the world I haven't seen yet, so much to do, there's a lyric I heard on the radio tonight - I'm getting paid by the hour and older by the minute.

That opens up the job market, revitalizes the housing market, and there’s always the hope the new millionaires will lose control of their new sports cars and that puts their house back on the market.
I think it would work. I would very much like to offer myself as a guinea pig.
The UK does keep increasing the pension age, not sure why, either to reduce pension payments or keep people in work...
That's why I'm prepared to swear to bother the authorities for only 10 more years. BARGAIN, really.
Good planning, you'll be a neighbour of Map's at this rate, and then the local ladies will be chased from all sides
I was 55 and if course he is 10 years younger then boom, the economic meltdown of which most of us here in the US suffered a great deal.
So having been a victim of that collapse not only did I end my 30 years marriage but now I'm back to working.
Then I RS, slapped me with heavy tax since I collected my retirement early at 62 1/2, because I made so much money. At 66 doesn't matter what you earn, no penalty.
Generally the SS determined 66, because if you worked since 25, and amortized your house for 30 years, invested in 401 K or IRA, it's predetermined that you'd be financially comfortable after 62.5, which is allowed as early retirement age.
Well I lost my investment, forclosed not one but two houses so voila I think now I can't retire until 80, if only to live as I planned. Wheeew. I'd better find a rich man Elle.
I don't know.
Now health insurance is an average of $600 bucks if you're not over 65. Thank God, I am covered with a good insurance just because I am past that age.
Now some can retire early because of economic bounty while big percentage of seniors here are not that lucky because like I said, the collapse of our economy.
It's pathetic to see some seniors working at McDonald and or Walmart to make ends meet.
Tough Elle. Me? Maybe 10 more years, yikes. .
Great blog Elle.
NICE one.
I think the most chilling thing I read recently was that one in FOUR British adults around the 30 / 40 mark is banking on winning the lottery to fund their old age.
Yikes.
Not that I'm planning to visit, you're safe. Cross-my-heart.
(Doing a lot of that, this blog!)
But I'm healthy and hopefully I can reinvent my life again.
So work it is.
Anyone here HAVE a job like that?
Did you see that award winning house? Bear with, looking for the link - nope, bloody FB moved it. Anyway you probably saw it - voted the best house design of the year
It's not that I adore my job that much, although I do like it, but I just don't think that far ahead.
I'll see what happens when the time comes.
Plus stopping work when it's still interesting and fun - who wants to?
(well, me. But so many other things I want to do!)
I can't be going all political this time of night Scotty ;0) but yes it is unfair on the majority who don't have the luxury to retire early. On that note I'm going go retire to my bedroom lol. Nite
But I'm alright, all I have to do is be careful on investment choices this time. Safe and not aggressive.
