Retirement - 30? 70?

They keep moving the goalposts. At this rate I will be 102 when I can finally totter off to a well-earned rest.

If I promise cross-my-heart I will only claim a pension for a maximum of 10 years, could I quit work now?

I looked up retirement age in various countries - according to Wiki, it is currently 66 for both men and women in the US - in China women can retire as young as 50. Some countries as late as 68, some jobs (like the armed forces) much earlier, some jobs, like judges or cardinals, 75-ish.

Not everyone wants to retire.

Some want to pack it in at 50-something with a sigh of relief.

Some want to become US president at 70-something (both candidates were over 70).

Hands up those who love their jobs so much they would be happiest dying at their desk uh oh

Huge chunks of the world I haven't seen yet, so much to do, there's a lyric I heard on the radio tonight - I'm getting paid by the hour and older by the minute.

YES

LET ME OUT OF HERE rolling on the floor laughing

I know, I know, find a job you love and it will never feel like work again.
You heard that theory that everyone, at age 50, should be offered the equivalent of a million bucks to stop working, buy a new house and a new car, and that’s IT, they have to make it last for the rest of their lives?

That opens up the job market, revitalizes the housing market, and there’s always the hope the new millionaires will lose control of their new sports cars and that puts their house back on the market.

I think it would work. I would very much like to offer myself as a guinea pig.
Hi Biffy, I officially retired at 45 because I could, I do work out of boredom, can't just laze around the pool all day, it gets monotonous.

The UK does keep increasing the pension age, not sure why, either to reduce pension payments or keep people in work...
There won't be one if I ever make that age, just chuffed I took out a few private ones when I was 18, only got to wait till I'm 50 to cash in and I am officially retiring,...........................Espana, here I come,.......banana head banger
oh, the age has to go up, there are people drawing pensions for more years than they ever actually worked laugh

That's why I'm prepared to swear to bother the authorities for only 10 more years. BARGAIN, really.
Scotty, you're a man of means? batting

Good planning, you'll be a neighbour of Map's at this rate, and then the local ladies will be chased from all sides laugh
Elle, the concept of retirement to most people us not a matter of age but financial freedom. At least my ex husband and I thought so.

I was 55 and if course he is 10 years younger then boom, the economic meltdown of which most of us here in the US suffered a great deal.

So having been a victim of that collapse not only did I end my 30 years marriage but now I'm back to working.

Then I RS, slapped me with heavy tax since I collected my retirement early at 62 1/2, because I made so much money. At 66 doesn't matter what you earn, no penalty.

Generally the SS determined 66, because if you worked since 25, and amortized your house for 30 years, invested in 401 K or IRA, it's predetermined that you'd be financially comfortable after 62.5, which is allowed as early retirement age.

Well I lost my investment, forclosed not one but two houses so voila I think now I can't retire until 80, if only to live as I planned. Wheeew. I'd better find a rich man Elle.

I don't know.

Now health insurance is an average of $600 bucks if you're not over 65. Thank God, I am covered with a good insurance just because I am past that age.

Now some can retire early because of economic bounty while big percentage of seniors here are not that lucky because like I said, the collapse of our economy.

It's pathetic to see some seniors working at McDonald and or Walmart to make ends meet.

Tough Elle. Me? Maybe 10 more years, yikes. .

Great blog Elle. wave
Scotty handshake four is exactly right - 4 rents = 1 income, and not too much to keep an eye on. Buy one more for life's little luxuries?

NICE one.
LJ, eek. A rich man definitely the easiest answer!

I think the most chilling thing I read recently was that one in FOUR British adults around the 30 / 40 mark is banking on winning the lottery to fund their old age.

Yikes.
Thanks legs, going to build my own home in Spain, already got the land,...............banana
LJ, looking back at what I said about the presidential candidates - go into politics? You have the passion, and that's NOT controlled by age!
Scotty, whereabout? Roughly, roughly grin

Not that I'm planning to visit, you're safe. Cross-my-heart.

(Doing a lot of that, this blog!)
Yes Elle, now I'm buying lottery tickets like crazy. One of my old friend won 62 million Elle, now I don't even know where they disappeared to, whole family. Someone said, bought a mansion I'm Hawaii.

But I'm healthy and hopefully I can reinvent my life again.
So work it is.
wave
Ha ha lol your ok Legs,............5 acres just outside Fuengirola,.........................thumbs up
Well then LJ it's back to plan B. Find a job you love, and it will never feel like work -

Anyone here HAVE a job like that?
~Scotty I found a place called La Gorgorocha. Never seen it, and I believe it's tiny, but I LOVE that name. So if you happen to hear of anything going up for sale there, let me know.

Did you see that award winning house? Bear with, looking for the link - nope, bloody FB moved it. Anyway you probably saw it - voted the best house design of the year
Got it. WAN house of the year - the 4th one down won. Bit weird, I thought, but some awesome features.

The 6th one is more what I have in mind, lots of glass and light,....................head banger
Hmm, the French one? I must look up your area and see what the max temperatures would be, you might need to add a cellar for the hottest weeks of the summer laugh
Just looked. Near Marbella. Nicely convenient for the next blogger meet, prepare for lots of visitors grin
Got to have a cellar for the wine, I want to have my own little vineyard and produce my own, Marbella is lovely and almost next door, I could throw a CS party,...................banana head banger dancing drinking wine
I never ever think about retirement dunno

It's not that I adore my job that much, although I do like it, but I just don't think that far ahead.

I'll see what happens when the time comes.
But you COULD retire now - with that million quid theory I outlined - be a guinea pig with me! banana
Ok all your retirement financial problems solved, invest all your money in Sevillana-Endesa (the electric supplier for Malaga) professor I have insider knowledge banana You'll be quids in, as soon as Scotty has built his Brit Oven wow you'll be able to watch the euros roll in ever time the sun comes out (320 days a year) & Scotty turns on the aircon laugh rolling on the floor laughing laugh
Z, brilliant, I can trade on myself and help you all out at the same time,...................laugh Start buying your share price now, get a head start,.....................banana
Cool, the more you entertain, the richer we all get. PARTY! beverage delivery
Ha ha legs, got to look after my pals,............................head banger dancing wine
Now browsing through the women in China on this site I noticed that most of the older women are still working, very few retirees. Quite an economic expansion in China!
KB, absolutely, I based my numbers on the earliest age one could claim a govt pension, but none of us, any country, could actually live on a govt pension without a very helpful family at the very least

Plus stopping work when it's still interesting and fun - who wants to?

(well, me. But so many other things I want to do!)
The chinese are super healthy and prone to live to an old age and fair play, funny divide this can be as my mum is 71 now and still working, I say come on mum, chill now, I can carry on looking after you, but she always says to me, and do what become lazy and redundant and let my brain waste away, I think if she stops she thinks she will drop dead, I get her point though,.........................hug
It is common for someone who has worked hard all their life and been healthy, to retire and become ill. I think this is because all those years there was a purpose and then all of a sudden everything changes. I can't ever imagine doing nothing and see myself doing some form of work or travel etc until the day I pass. I think that everyone deserves to do as they choose at whatever age, if someone wants to and can retire at 40 or 50 then great, but think that upping the age all the time is unfair as some people dont have the luxury of choice. I think the answer is marry a nice rich man and not have to worry (only joking) I'm far too independent to live off of a man!
Rough, well said, that's how my mum is, she just loves her routine and nothing will change that,......
We can't discriminate the people as you rightly said that don't have that luxury through no fault of their own, be it illness, disability, other problems, sorry, forgot to say that,.................
Bless her, im sure she knows what's best as sounds like she is bright as a button. We feel the vulnerability that they don't! Hope I'm still fit and active at 71.
well I think working past 60 is unfair on people .if one has worked all their life should be able to stop then if they want to should be let to stay if there able and want to maybe reduce days would be nice and reduce tax after sixty
Yes John I agree, freedom to choose to retire at 60.

I can't be going all political this time of night Scotty ;0) but yes it is unfair on the majority who don't have the luxury to retire early. On that note I'm going go retire to my bedroom lol. Nite wave
Me either, just sticking up for our older generation, night,.......................wave
Oh, I love my job alright Elle, but money is not quite as it used to be.

But I'm alright, all I have to do is be careful on investment choices this time. Safe and not aggressive.
LJ, I could help you out there, what I do for myself, not a company just me, mines daily as well as long term,.....
OK Scott, fire it up. What Company? I can't afford Google or Yahoo but thinking about Pepsi. .lol...
