Books for 8 to 10 year olds?

I know this is an odd place to ask but a granny friend of mine was a little horrified to find her granddaughter has to read a school book which has torture of horses, quite a few swearies, and some naked flirting between the characters. She asked the school if that was appropriate for 8 to 10 year olds and was told there are very few books which ARE suitable. The old standbys she and I grew up with are too out of touch in today's world and most of the modern books for kids have witchcraft, imaginary creatures, or other unreal stuff, and the school doesn't hold with that sort of stuff. scold

(torturing animals, no worries. Dragons or hobbits, EEK) (got it)

So that's the question. Those with kids (or grandkids) in this age range - come across any good books, set in more-or-less modern times and more-or-less real life, which are fun to read?

She wants to go back to the school with some suggestions rather than just saying she's not happy with the book they chose.

Biff. Modern "edumacators", advising parents against the old standbyes, in favor of what really may be pulpy post modern age inappropriate trash. What could possibly be wrong with this picture? Visit your local public library, and consult with a kindly elderly librarian, and in a minute he (she) will have dozens of great kids books for you to thumb through, and then be able to recommend. But aren't you a writer---any of your stuff for kiddies? Aa.
yeah it don't sound like very nice reading for children im sur theirs loads don't know any off hand butbmodern mammies might give best advice
Aa I don't write for kiddies, and don't think I could, there's quite a knack to making it simple-but-interesting.

I did also run the question through the Authors group I belong to and even they are finding it difficult to come up with stuff the school would think suitable - something as 'fantastical' as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, puhleeze, flying cars talk to hand Wind In The Willows puhleeze talking animals talk to hand Nancy Drew, What Katy Did, Anne of Green Gables, puhleeze too old-fashioned talk to hand

confused

By the way the teacher has now (!) read the book and it has been withdrawn. yay
Hi Elegs,

I'm sure with your intelligent and great story writing, YOU could come up with a children's story. I know I could come up with one in just a few minutes, but it wouldn't be as good as something you could create.

I know you've got it in you. You're a great writer.

Good luck to your friend and her granddaughter.
And may you have a nice happy day. hug
JJ some authors have been suggested (e.g. Jacqueline Wilson) and I'm ashamed to say I don't know of them. Modern mammies are my best hope!
Aw Rob that's so sweet hug but no, I don't think I could. If you really could knock one off in a few minutes, boy is there a big market out there waiting for you!

Kids are very different today, no hope of them reading Enid Blyton or Robinson Crusoe types, because even at that age they are glued to smartphones and Ipads they are exposed to some horrors of the world, perhaps the book in question was mild in their eyes.

The best option is to let the kids decide, they know what they want, we cant expect Grannies and grandads to choose these days.
Map, kids decide not to read, that's what they decide.

Teachers do have to give them books and make them read them, and that's where the problem came in. Pretty much any book any of us remembers enjoying for sure didn't have TV, mobile phones, playstations, don't-talk-to-strangers. But books can't just be full of warnings, that would be the pits, so the trick is to get them to stop living through electronic devices and exploring and motivated ...

No pressure laugh
Biff that will never happen, kids and tech are now normal, maybe they would read digital books but the subject matter is beyond me, having never spawned any or interacted with any I can't offer an opinion.dunno
Spawned, love it laugh

Reading is in real danger of becoming a forgotten art but when people DO have to read - like an instruction booklet - they need to have the ability fixed in place.

Or, of course, they could just watch a how-to video. sigh
Biff, would the Goosebumps series be too much for the school? My kids read them at about that age and loved them. Mind you, they're probably a bit dated by now laugh
Diary of a wimpy kid series are awesomely funny.

Captain underpants also has a very funny premise..

as for something with a very classical and timeless theme, there is a series of books called
"Percy Jackson & the Olympians" my boys loved these and after reading them were drawing and talking about all manner of historical and cultural references. As would be expected as these books are a fantastic retelling of the pinnacle of story telling that is Greek mythology ..

Hope this helped Biff, wave
Go check em out for yourself thumbs up
I love Perry Jackson myself laugh

Welcome back, Non bouquet
Molly,
Who the hell is Perry Jackson. laugh

wave
unlaoised,
Never read the goosebump books,
but I loved the movie which I believe contains all the bad guys from the series jackolantern
Yeah Molly,
Ducking auto-correct laugh wave
I think 10 year olds would like the Artemis Fowl books.
Biff I loved the Secret 7,, guess very few are old enough to remember that, and the 3 'Marys, but they were good books, nothing too cruel, but from a literature point, maybe not the best... like the Bunty annual which I loved.
Dan Dare pilot of the future, The Secret Garden.. I think that is timeless. Just came into my head.
Oh yay lots more comments, and HELPFUL!

Red, yay, yes have a look please and be CAREFUL I think Lord of the Flies had kids around that age uh oh

Un, the Goosebumps series is a good call, added to list writing and you know what, 'dated' is irrelevant. A good story that catches and fires a kid's imagination should be the objective. It's all about learning to enjoy reading!

Non, hi! and long time no kid for me, these are all new to me. Adding to the list! writing loving the idea of the Percy Jackson (aka Perry Jackson) ones in particular.

applause
I think they do, Non....if memory serves me correctly confused
