Doing good, for my God and my fellow man

I was raised with the Ten Commandments. I honor and love it.

I was also raised to believe that doing good is socially and Godly beneficial for all.

On top of that the Golden Rule is very good for all whether you believe in God or not.

And life is beautiful.

Thanks all for your reads and comments if any.wine

these two commandments are a write-off for obvious reasons:

You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

these commandments are common ethics to just about any culture:

Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet.

So what is wrong? We do not need these "commandments" when there is love and consideration for your own self and therefore for your fellow human beings. And when we do not have it, we need a lot more than just 10 commandments, we need entire books of Law administered by the Department of Justice and enforced by the Police.

So anyone who says that they keep the ten commandments, did not say much. They maybe living off other people (called good business practice), exploit them (called competitive labor markets), bear false witness against strangers..why not, it is not on the LIST. And at the same time be observing the Sabbath. What a joke :)

lindsy, I'm not sure if your question is more a statement that you are willing to help people if you can, or that it is a question and you're assuming something is wrong. It also would assume everyone here is an earthling, or if it is not then you are only asking them. I'm not sure in any case that everyone is.

Thanks metro.

Arpito, first welcome to the blog world, my first time to see you. Second thank you for your disdainful comment.

I don't know about other people but my intention on this post is to affirm John Locke's philosophy that we become mostly who we are because of our environment. Of course the most prevailing source of who we are is our genetics.
I've shared this opinion because I recognize that man by nature and in general is flawed. However we're given all possibilities to improve if not eliminate those flaws. It's in our efforts through the power of learning that we can do that. If we don't choose to change knowing so that we need to for our own good as well as our fellow human beings, then we won't be contributing good to humanity.
That's my personal opinion. I was raised by a very loving and good parents. I copied that ways in raising my lovely four children. Let's just say that while they're not perfect, I'm happy and glad how they all turned out.
In this sometimes cruel and very undesirable world, we need to be aware of our responsibilities as parents that can help shape these young children of ours. If I didn't make them aware of these readings plus their good leaning from school, I'm sure, it'dwould have not been easy, and worst, involved in the bad elements of life.
There's nothing wrong in the acknowledgement of the source of our good manners and positive thinking. wave

Tomboy, thank you for joining in. Also welcome to the blog world. My first time to see you, too.
Fellow earthlings, I meant, was our fellow citizen's of this world.
I do agree with you that money as a tool if making our lives miserable. Not for all and certainly not for all times but when we lost control and get carried away by its power to do bad. wave
lindsyjones
Eejay, nice to see you and thank you for being a part of the discussion. I just felt like sharing my not too significant thoughts, that's all. wave

lindsyjohnes - do not take opposing opinions personally. Be concise and stick to the points instead of giving rambling dissertations to some simple propositions that i raised. A little bit of thinking is useful too when it comes to these things such as following commandments. All you had to say in substance to my observations is that you were raised this way and you want to acknowledge its positive effects. But your own experience is dwarfed by the experience of mankind. You can dress it up any way you like it. Following commandments is fundamentalism and mediocrity and not fulfilling our human potential.

Perhaps saying "what a joke" offended you. I did not mean your opinion, but the concept of following commandments.
Thank you
arpito
"So what's wrong fellow earthlings?"

Well to tell the truth, these here are discussion threads that anyone can start, not really personal blogs. So when i see someone sitting on it like a mother hen and graciously greeting newcomers to it, i get an uneasy feeling of being patronized instead of feeling welcome.

Discussions are only good when people do not try to dominate them. That is all i have to say.

Enjoy.
lindsyjones
Arpito, why do you sound like I've made a nasty statement on my post?
If there is anything I said that's worth all your contempt it was not my intention.

Thank you just the same. wave

I don't like the 10 commandments.

Generally i don't know them all because there are some weird ones in it.

second.

before the 10 commandments a bunch of children were selectively killed in egypt.
there was also some biological warfare included... plagues and such

And after the ten commandments the so called refugees start a killing spree in Israel.

luckily none of the slavery or refugee group or 40y desert is really historically accurate or relevant
but still... I don't care what you say. i care more about what you do...
saying killing is bad and then massacring cities who are defending themselves .... it speak for itself

It doesn't pass my ethics or morality.

lindsyjones
Leno, thanks for your opinion.

Haven't seen you in a while.

Anyways I don't doubt about the weird stuff in the old testament, but the commandment us all simple and direct. wave
lindsyjones
Ash, is this the one?

Yes ..glad to see it is fixed.now if CS could also send my ecard with my messages and stop making the receiving person frustrated by the invisibility.rolling on the floor laughing wave good deeds for the day!
lindsyjones
Patti, I didn't see it but thanks for your concerns.

Take care. wave
I do not believe in the ten commandments. I only believe in God, not religon
lindsyjones
Fair enough. Here's my question?
The first one says: "thou shall not kill."

And down to "obey your parents", Are tgey in any conflict with what you believe in?wave

The 10 Commandments List, Short Form
You shall have no other gods before Me.
You shall not make idols.
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
5, Honor your father and your mother.
6, You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet.

the killing is officially 6.
After showing them a lot of killing was done in the group beneath the mountain.

you've got to like Hitchens sometimes.

and he goes a bit mockery, but he did mentions a lot of verses these youtube channels ignore..
Amon-Ra, no idea about the name, about 10 commandments

But i like the parts where he links the commandements to that constitution. and i do consider the usa constitution a decent document
lindsyjones
Leno thanks for these contribution.

I still maintain that they're all good, the question is galf if the world don't know about them and those who know them don't recognize it's benefits.

I'm not saying I am perfect but I try to live by them.
Len05
hey Lindsay,
thank you for being so friendly. i might have needed that.
i can't change that.

I can only argue that they embody something you hold dear. or represent some part you would like.
And not that they tell you something. or that they guide.

It is the same with Americans waving a constitution but have never read it.
Or Geneva or declaration of human rights.

I would say, read those 10. write them in hand. read them again. And i kinda imagine that if you have to write them again that you would want to improve something on them.

lindsyjones
Leno, in time, things change. For the better, I hope. There are many provisions in the old testament that are not beneficial or applicable to the new world anymore. Specially in the Leviticus chapters.

I'm sure there are always things to be improved in a way that serves us best.

Thanks
imantitaxesru
we are all striving for the best for our best selves you would think.

Many choose to cross reference the Bible Verse with a book called exhaust comprehension I think, which uses Greek and Jewish languages to compare the translations verse by verse.

One wouldn't rewrite our Constitution any more than they would modernize the Bible. They' ve stood the test of time. Those who have belong to cults that borrow the message to practice self direction. It's purpose is to have a relationship with God.

Obama studied Constitution Law but his college transcripts can not be corroborated. His 8 years in office went against the grain of the balance of power, to check and balance his office.

Same applies with principles to love each other over self serving actions.
ashlander
Or empowerment that corrupts and restricts freedom. The Bible is about freedom too.

* exhaustive

I am reading the Apocrypha and some Buddhist works.
lindsyjones
Imanti, I would definitely think that, but at the same time, evil is around us most of the time. Imo.

"Obama studied Constitution Law but his college transcripts can not be corroborated. His 8 years in office went against the grain of the balance of power, to check and balance his office."

Indeed, he is the most questionable person as far as records of transparency is concerned.

Anyways, there are also numerous occasions where we can question his loyalty or commitment to support constitution and rights of the people.

Ie, when Paris was bombed and the Islamic terrorist took the credit, still he put so much effort in protecting the reputation of islam instead of outright condemn that responsibility.

Anyways, it is part of the past and hopefully, our country is not weakened enough to lose our battle to greatness.
