MAJOR CARIBBEAN STORM

Although still being mostly ignored by mainstream mainland media in the US a major disaster potentially much worse than Hurricane Andrew's path through Texas is about to strike the US. I am referring to Hurricane Irma.
As the NOAA maps published today show most of the US possessions in the Caribbean are about to be slammed by a category 5 hurricane with wind speeds over 170 MPH and associated storm surge and heavy rain.

It has admittedly been a decade since my last visit, but no building I saw was designed to withstand winds like that.

Based on the maps below, I anticipate many casualties in places such as Saint Thomas, Coral Bay and the island of Culebra. On the Puerto Rico mainland both Carolina and San Juan are being forecast to receive not just the storm surge, but also the full force of the hurricane winds.

San Juan's Luis Muñoz Marín Airport (SJU) runways are normally only 1 foot above normal high tide. The storm surge of ocean water accompanying this storm may well exceed 14 feet. This will have profound implications for the delivery of any FEMA aid after the storm. Likewise, due to storm damage many of the ports on the island's North side will probably not be usable.

I do not anticipate any meaningful aid at all arriving in places like Saint Martins, Antigua, or Culebra for several weeks afterwards.

Although it has not yet fully developed a second storm Jose appears to be following a similar path only a few days behind Irma.

Generally natural disasters don't hit mainstream news until they hit an English-speaking or major player country.
LoL, trust me, when Saint Thomas goes under water, then the mainstream US will howl. Likewise when they get the new bill for disaster relief from Puerto Rico EVERYONE here will howl.
sky news has had this on the storm has been upgraded as they say to very dangerous So sad for people in its path.sad flower
Ken
Will President Trump at least recognize climate change due to our fossil fuel consumption...many communities in BC burning due to hot dry climate...many are evacuated...check it out...our moon is now orange like Trump...lol...laugh
Gosh parts of the U.S. are getting a terrible bashing. The last one was said to be the worst in living memory, isn't that a wake up call about what is causing climate change.

As usual the poorest people will suffer the most.
I have seen warnings on several different stations about it.sad flower
I am not worried about Florida. Those folks have the option of fleeing now. Most of our islanders however do not have that option, even if they have the money, there are only so many airplane flights scheduled and friends on the ground there are reporting all flights are already over booked. We are already approaching the final opportunity to make a safe get away by boat, indeed that time has already passed for the island of Antigua. The island of Puerto Rico has 4.5 milion residents. Eighty percent live near the coast. There are only a few highways leaving the coastal areas and they are normally jammed anyway. In Florida folks can just hop in their car and leave. That doesn't work on an island.
thumbs up to your last comment Ken....I lived in 2 hurricane risk cities for a couple of years and I´m 100% with your last statement ....sigh
