Medicating Human Needs

If you are depressed and anxious, you are not a machine with malfunctioning parts. You are a human being with unmet needs.
The only real way out of our epidemic of despair is for all of us, together, to begin to meet those human needs – for deep connection, to the things that really matter in life

This is a quote from an edited extract from Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression – and the Unexpected Solutions by Johann Hari.

The extract/book would be worth reading for those with an interest in something that seems to be pervasive throughout our society.

Medication is the go-to solution for many people/doctors - but does medication cure human needs?

BTW - As long as we've broached the subject of cures...
I see the Zurich Blur Specialist has effected a total recovery!
very happy
I've never seen anyone more sharply defined applause
NEVER I'm tellin' ya! yay
And that new platinum blonde look?...love

uh oh

Just a suggestion, you understand...
I'm thinkin' you may be just a wee mite anemic...kinda pale crazy
You might try getting a bit more iron -
Liver, dark green leafy veggies...
an occasional slug of blackstrap molasses couldn't hurt drinking
NOT light or medium scold Blackstrap is what you want!
Very natural.

B-12 injections if it's pernicious...
but definitely try natural/holistic first.
Just sayin'.

My Health Guru is teaching me homeopathic ways of life, I personally think medication is a last resort, legal cannabis and natural remedies do a better job.
Mic, thank you for all your very useful medical tips.

I shall print them out and go health food shopping straight away.

But if I come on here with a new username like Aaliyah or Precious, then you'll know I've overdone it on the blackstrap .
Map, good to see you, stranger handshake

I don't use a lot of homeopathic medicines myself, but I have seen them working on others, including animals. I might get your advice if I ever need it.

I personally try to do as much with diet as I can.
I firmly believe we are what we eat wine
Hmm depression is the common cold of the human mind - we're all going to have regular bouts of it.

This is the second astonishing breakthrough I've seen getting coverage in the last few days, and the shock horror GPs are reaching for the meds too quickly findings.

We're all going to be leading sedated programmed lives soon enough, as soon as the testing stage is complete, and why not? Most people are happiest with TV to watch, a smart-phone to keep us connected to our important peeps, and food on hand. Any moments of anxiety or worrying whether there should be more to life can and will be treated with a quick pill.

Best part, no comeback in the long term because the powers that be can say hey, there was plenty of debate on the issue and people still chose the pills
I take anti-depressants....and they keep me in a good place!....grin
Hi Jazz I did too for 3 years - work related stress, not depression, but the same pills - and they keep you in a level place. No scary troughs of darkness but no mountain-top sunshine. I'm not knocking them, because I'd reached a point where with all the cheery advice in the world I wasn't coping any more, but it's not such a good place, it's an unstressed existence.

The scariest part of the whole thing was coming off them 5 years ago and realizing that tiny little pill, which seemed to be barely making a difference, was controlling my entire life and my moods. I hate being controlled! It was a bad 3 months taking my life back into my own hands, not easy at all.

But, like hitting your thumb with a hammer - it's great when you stop cool
wave jazz!

You might want to look into the item pitched in the parody ad vid a few comments above roll eyes
It's the vid that Molly opened grin
Yes. It's THAT good!

Problems, depression. or just life in general, we all encounter them sometimes. When life's little kick in the tail gets me down I turn to a time-honored and trusted remedy. Old Grandad 101 over the rocks and with some pure water will make life worth living again . . . . . drink pouring bartender
Grouchy, self medicating? laugh
TR, my friend's ex was like that as well.

She would be a naturally creative person, but on meds she is slow, dulled and has little zest for life.
However, presently, without the meds she would be manic.
is the right place if your depressed full of nutters ..
JJ, I'd hate you to feel left out grin
didn't read all the comments but if a person is depressed id be of a mind go to doc and tell him how you are these home remedies are a waste I think
JJ, the blog was just about alternative thinking.
Rather than just immediately reaching for meds, to explore other options.
about what remedies is lots of depression around here often think its isolation more than depression
JJ, loneliness is causing a lot of problems in the world

In England, they are taking it seriously at last. They have made a minister especially to look into it and deal with it.
yeah ..is the cause of a lot of depression .....here in pubs loads of young people drinking every night just drink drink have no life never even leave village ...am not a drinker really but its so sad is hidden as well everyone knows but turn a blind eye to call them drunks but all is wrong is empty souls
Make a big mix up, then lung into the bongs. You'll be right in no time.
JJ, that happens in all small towns and villages unfortunately

The Irish attitude to alcohol doesn't help.
Thanks Dr. Pat.

I'll send you a steady stream of patients

(All hotties of course )
I just tried to pull up the first URL and it came up blank. So enter the word Tysabri which is the MS drug I mentioned and look in the right hand corner to see over 3k deaths.

Mic, you are too easy laugh
KN, regarding older people, I once watched a documentary about older people and their meds. It was scary the amount of meds they were taking daily firstly, but also the majority of them hadn't had their meds reviewed by their doctors in decades.
They could be taking meds they no longer need, or there could be better meds available which they weren't getting access to.
Hi 1to, I love your positive attitude, and refusal to just submit to either your illness or medication. Well done you cheers
That should read Chantix not Changed
Thanks for that, Sea, but I don't think I need to bookmark it as I am not on any medication
Ms mollybaby, call it preemptive action.......thank me later....maybe there are family or friends who are taking some meds......offer freely. conceal mildly...
Medication is needed. I’ve had every need met and still suffer depression. To suggest that it is simply a result of not enough anything sets this illness back in terms of misinformation
Free, nobody is suggesting medication is never necessary, but that it shouldn't be seen as the first or only option.

Welcome back bouquet
Theres alot to be said about ones own repsonsibility about what they put in their own mouths being an indicator of how much they look after their own mental health.

So many chemicals pumped into food nowadays and we dont know for sure how they are affecting our own minds and the brains chemical balance.

Maybe there should be a serious link of checking this all out first with Doctors instead of the typical..symptom and diagnosis then medication route that is there.

On the flip side someone with a condition as Toykos sister faces theres every need for it which i know no one is denying.

Im guilty of not being too concerned about what i eat .which is why im thinking of trying the vegan diet for the purposes of cleansing my body and mind...or some other plant based diet..
Free, I am glad that you found what works for you bouquet
Dee, we are what we eat.

I wish you the best of luck with your vegan diet. It wouldn't be for me, as I love a little bit (a lot laugh ) of everything, but it does work for some people.
Tru, as long as you are happy, we're all happy grin
Stuff the diet, have a few bongs instead.
@ Pat.

Lets call that plan B

bouquet
Oh yeaaaahhh moping

See not on the diet yet and im already gone crazy!!

grin
I watched the movie "Side Effects" today.. it was really good with an unexpected twist towards the end. thumbs up

I haven't seen many depressed people (on medication) in my life, so this movie gave me a slight insight on how it might feel and the side effects some meds can have.

... and of course Rooney Mara is always nice on the eyes.. smitten
Hi Incu, I haven't seen it yet. It sounds good though

Unfortunately, many people in the West, especially the US are on anti-depressant medication. Something like 13% of all Americans are on them, which is scary.

Especially considering they should have less to be depressed about than the rest of the world.

Although.... giggle
