The Fool

Introduction to The Fool,

I have not read a book for 6-7 years now for, I decided that all books read up to then was more than enough to be overwhelmed by information included in them.

However, if it was to pick up and choose just one book from all books read that would have been the one lately recommended to a few people when talked about books.

This is my favourite one, Dhammapada.

The only book read by me several times during different periods and stages in my life.

Each time read as if it was the first time read, the meaning of the verses perceiced/seen differently each time.

Each time, a different message received, a lesson to be learned and applied by me.

All a very hard work , all worth it in the end.

Dhammapada is a compilation of ancient, wise stories/sayings said to have come straight from the mouth of Budha.

My favourite one from Dhammapada has been since the first day, the whole book read and continued to be up to now, The Fool.

The Fool, follows below,

Chapter 5, The Fool

60. Long is the night to the sleepless; long is the league to the weary. Long is worldly existence to fools who know not the Sublime Truth.

61. Should a seeker not find a companion who is better or equal, let him resolutely pursue a solitary course; there is no fellowship with the fool.

62. The fool worries, thinking, "I have sons, I have wealth." Indeed, when he himself is not his own, whence are sons, whence is wealth?

63. A fool who knows his foolishness is wise at least to that extent, but a fool who thinks himself wise is a fool indeed.

64. Though all his life a fool associates with a wise man, he no more comprehends the Truth than a spoon tastes the flavor of the soup.

65. Though only for a moment a discerning person associates with a wise man, quickly he comprehends the Truth, just as the tongue tastes the flavor of the soup.

66. Fools of little wit are enemies unto themselves as they move about doing evil deeds, the fruits of which are bitter.

67. Ill done is that action of doing which one repents later, and the fruit of which one, weeping, reaps with tears.

68. Well done is that action of doing which one repents not later, and the fruit of which one, reaps with delight and happiness.

69. So long as an evil deed has not ripened, the fool thinks it as sweet as honey. But when the evil deed ripens, the fool comes to grief.

70. Month after month a fool may eat his food with the tip of a blade of grass, but he still is not worth a sixteenth part of the those who have comprehended the Truth.

71. Truly, an evil deed committed does not immediately bear fruit, like milk that does not turn sour all at once. But smoldering, it follows the fool like fire covered by ashes.

72. To his own ruin the fool gains knowledge, for it cleaves his head and destroys his innate goodness.

73. The fool seeks undeserved reputation, precedence among monks, authority over monasteries, and honor among householders.

74. "Let both laymen and monks think that it was done by me. In every work, great and small, let them follow me" — such is the ambition of the fool; thus his desire and pride increase.

75. One is the quest for worldly gain, and quite another is the path to Nirvana. Clearly understanding this, let not the monk, the disciple of the Buddha, be carried away by worldly acclaim, but develop detachment instead.

The End.

Hi Star,
It is amazing the attention that a fool gets in religious and spiritual literature. The bible also gives some attention to fools. Not all together as here but scattered through the bible. Solomon says that even a fool can be mistaken for wise as long as he keeps his mouth shut. Anyway, I better stop talking.laugh

Speaking about silence, I copy and paste below, a Cherokee prayer that, I absolutely love and always did, since the first time I've read this,

O’ Great Spirit, help me always to speak the truth quietly, to listen with an open mind when others speak, and to remember the peace that may be found in silence. —

@Catfoot,

Hahahaha laugh laugh rolling on the floor laughing , are you being seriously very cheeky , honest or both? laugh

Thanks for the laugh, as a matter of fact, can't stop laughing here laugh laugh
Hi Crunia and nice to hear from you kiss,

The only and last thing I remember reading was the article you recommended in your blog prior to commenting on it.

No more books for me, for now and, for years now.

There's no writer for Dhammapada , just those who collected and put together into a very little book the ancient sayings said to have come straight from the mouth of Buddha himself.

Dhammapada is just that, a collection of these ancient stories/sayings in the form of poems and verses, carrying in them as I see it, wisdom.

One of the reasons being my favorite book is that, it makes me think after each verse of each chapter read.

It's a very little book that changed my life for the better , same goes for my flawed, imperfect person.

It won't take you long to read it, I'm sure, hope it benefits and provides inspiration to you as much as it benefited and provided inspiration to me.

I do know Coelho, read some of his books and I'm a fan of him as well.

Hi Stargazer
Silence is one of the greatest virtues given to mankind.
It is the only substitute for brains.
teddybear
Hello Bea and hope that you are alright,

And, silence comes with patience and control, a break that refrains you from unnecessary speech and action at the wrong time.

A break that allows you to discriminate which way to go to, which way to follow when found yourself at a crossroad.

Right, wrong, good, evil, ever lasting concepts through time and history, eternal as the human soul.

What is the human that has not expanded their mind enough going to grasp?

Either through time or history, neither with time nor history is ever going to grasp a lesson to be learned or any change of harmful ways.

No lesson to be learned , no change of ways.

P.S: Sorry for the brainstorming and thanks for the inspiration in brainstorming.peace
Star, I have read a simple version of Dhammapada.
By any chance you know bit of Pali, the original Language they were written?

I like the stories. The one that says, like the wheels of a cart that follows the ox that is tied to the cart, karma follows you.

May your deeds be noble everyone.!peace

@ Usha,

Hello,

No, unfortunately, I don't know Pali, the original language the stories were written. I only wish I knew all of the ancient languages ancient scriptures or texts were written in but, I don't.

I always say , "if you really want to know of what it says , go to the original text and language it was written, not the translation of it".

Could you please be kind enough to copy and paste here the whole story of the wheel mentioned in your comment for all to read?.

Thanks and take care,

Hello Star.

I love your blogs and ur inspirational quote, stories and sayings.

I would love to ask..if its not too much trouble..but id like to know what your top two most inspirational books are..if you wouldnt mind sharing.

Im looking for new books to read.
It might keep me off CS for a while lol
Hello Deedee,

Thank you.

No, I don't mind sharing my top inspirational books.

If you read my blog, you read that it's been 6-7 years since I read a book and, I'm the sort of person who doesn't remember titles of books, stories, movies, songs etc.

However there were books that have been a bit of a catalyst or inspiration and therefore, still remember this.

The number 1 on top of my list of inspirational books, highly recommended to friends when discussed about books is the exact and same one recommended in this blog,

1. Dhammapada

The second one mostly recommended to friends was,

2. Games People Play: The Psychology of Human Relationships.

If it was to read another book then, this would be the one. This is a very old book full of practical examples in everyday life about mostly "mind games" people play in everyday life.

This is and was the second book mostly recommended by me to friends in the area of human psyche and relationships who wanted to increase awareness in these areas.

The book is just full of practical examples in everyday life with different roles they adopt along with the mind games they play, categorized as functional or dysfunctional.

Don't know if the specific areas interest you as a person and, if they do this book was and is highly recommended by me.
Star.

I did read ur blog and had taken down the name of the first book.
Was greedy and asked for more.
I wil certainly look them up and see if i can get them.

You Crunia and Incu inspired me to start my own quotes book.

@ Deedee,

I am completely unaware of the mentioned thread you mentioned.

I hardly had any time to read any blogs lately and absolutely nothing from the forums lately.

Do you mind mentioning what thread is that? If it's a good topic I might wanna read or interested in reading this when I get a bit of free time.

Thanks wave
@ StarG,

Fairly heavy reading, on the concepts, interpretation and depth of Hinduism, buddhism, zen etc ... it is not always clear (for me at least), but, as I am, I always do thorough research, and if possibly add comments later.

Definitely relevant to the subject as well as the blog "Study of Hinduism" created and later on unfortunately, deleted by me that, I absolutely regretted in doing this.
