Jealousy - what is it good for?

Even animals get jealous - for attention, or competing for the same thing - and Nature doesn't build in pointless emotions, so what is jealousy good for?

Anger gives us the strength and adrenalin rush to fight
Fear lends us wings to run away
Happiness rebuilds our strength to live another day
Love inspires us to build towards a future
etc

Jealousy seems such a destructive emotion but is it? I'm including things like

Envy of the achievements of others
Jealousy when a loved one seems to be making a connection with another and we feel threatened
Resentment when someone else is being praised

Benefits?

@Elegsabiff

Who knows whether I will ever meet another Scorpio man similar to those two! daydream

I usually attract Fire signs and - Taurus. uh oh I don't know why Taurus, but they like me. Maybe it's because my Moon and Venus are in Capricorn and Mars in Taurus. confused So far, I think that Sagittarius is the easiest sign to get along with. smile

Yes, so many sub-Scorpios. laugh
Kal, Krinka's your girl for this

But I see you're a Fire sign, have fun

Biff, I guess he wouldn't be my ex if we had been that compatible laugh

He was definitely totally different to me in every regard.

But he used to blame his bad qualities on his star sign..cop out laugh
Hey, just realized it is 01:39!!!!

Krinka my ex-fiance would be too old for you and anyway a bit of a dud - big on the passion and jealousy, not so much on the talking side laugh

If I had my life over again I would work my way through the Zodiac instead of sitting home half my life because oh dear what would the neighbours think if I was out all the time uh oh

rolling on the floor laughing
So, the two things I know about Leo, they are sensual, and they have manes of hair. And I know you like hair. laugh
And self-obsessed? laugh
Thanks Biff. And have a good night. hug
Jealousy can help you figure out how you feel about a relationship, if i do not care i have to ask myself, is that because i love him unconditionally or not at all. I have loved someone enough that i did not care that he saw other women, but to find that kind of connection so rare. The relationship can be fleeting as well because of the risk of being abandoned. You have given them their freedom and they choose others over you, by never having time for you.
Molly - and self-obsessed, yes!

Kal - already time to say g'night back to you! Logging out shortly myself for the night, unless I am back with coffee and browsing and see an irresistible reason to log in rolling on the floor laughing very unlikely

Marlin - if you love someone, set them free. If they come back, no-one else wanted them. Set them free again. laugh
I'm not laughing at you, not at all, but your comment reminded me of that old joke. I've once been in a relationship where I simply didn't care if he chatted others up, but I think in retrospect it was because he was fun short-term but was always going to be a disaster long-term. He was fun but also, the last I heard, a full-blown alcoholic with 5 mangled marriages behind him. Our instincts often know better than our heads.

Scoobler, that Facebook app is the best thing I ever found, CS may never see another normal pic of me again laugh I agree jealousy, envy, coveting, are all warped emotions but since an equivalent exists in nature I was throwing the topic out there to find out why. Instead I learned that hardly anybody suffered even a fleeting fluttering of it. grin

Mind you, there are a few on CS I have seen throw jealous tantrums on blogs, but they didn't comment rolling on the floor laughing
@Elegsabiff

If you love someone, set them free. If they come back, no-one else wanted them. Set them free again.

I've heard this joke for the first time. It's a good one. laugh

I like the type of Scorpio who makes me think: 'smitten What a smart, smart man! smitten ' heart wings laugh

On topic:

People have to protect their virtual persona. smile After all, this is a dating site. Jealousy is rarely considered to be a desirable characteristic, so people have to take care not to mention that they feel it in order not to lose potential partners. smile
Eish, I would like any man, any sign of the Zodiac, who makes me think he was smart. Or would I? Funny thing that the men who impress me with their brains very rarely attract a more primal response from me. My ex husband is a computer genius but on a human-to-human basis not so scintillating, so that worked. grin

I love being surprised when I have decided how a man I know well will react and instead he says something that is completely interesting. And of course a complete turn-off when instead he exposes himself as bigoted or incapable of original thought at all ...

On topic: sure, jealousy is unattractive. I like best the flashes of honesty that have showed in this blog, though. We all covet occasionally whether it is for seconds or a kickstarter towards achievement or to a worrying degree. It is a little too protective of our image to say 'I never have, never do, and never will, feel it'. I like self-aware honesty. Some very nice responses popped up in the comments

yay
Jealously Vs truth oppression...You have to look at the similarities and know the true differences...
...If you see a corrupt banker who is in a position of trust, then steal that money and still get a pension, then how do we feel? why were we not in that position of trust, why are we not earning the type of money these people earn, why do so many bad people of power and money...we should ask these questions and never be happy with this situation, because if we are good, then we know we would not allow these things to happen in our own lifes and we should want to have this belief system in the whole of society, but too many bad apples take up the tree of power
Any emotion you feel is good, let's you know you are still alive. How you deal with those emotions, that is the important part of being a grown up. I feel jealous at times, but it gives me the desire to reach for higher personal goals. If it involves a relationship, then I have to decide if my feelings warrant action or inaction, but never overreaction.
Hi, Lee, welcome to the blog. I don't completely understand the banker comment but then I'm a bit doff.

If we're going to swap non sequiturs, I'm curious that you write debating-type blogs then don't allow comments?

handshake
Biff, I WILL NOT get jealous in the above situation..

I WILL keep my cool and very calmly I’ll ask Art to choose the guide dog he wants coz his eyes would be gouged out kiss kiss kiss
Elle, yea, definitely feel the jealousy devil tap me on the shoulder in the crowded party scenario. Maybe even a little anger of feeling disrespected in public. Especially if it was some good looking guy.
I would have to pull my wits about me. I would probably try to get eye contact and give her that smile of desire for her that made her want to be with me in the first place. If I got no or cold response, I would start this thinking it is time for a serious rethinking on the relationship.
Biff, I've read your scenario.

I would love to be able to answer it definitively, but i can't.

My reason is that i can't envision a generic partner for the scenario.
If i put my ex in there instead, i dont feel jealous , more curiosity to know what it was about.

But if i have to answer. I think it would be curiosity.
@ Biff. Once upon a time I had a thread in favor of polyamory, so I love the heat. If the weather was good, I'd BBQ every day rolling on the floor laughing
If i may jump in and ask Krinka, who is compatible with a libran woman?....and whats our problem??

grin
Evil, fair enough. Oddly enough when I have dated types like yourself in the past - never, obviously, gone past friendly dating laugh I never have felt a moment's jealousy, even if it could take the guy half an hour to go to the loo and come back, he stopped so often to chat. I'd carry a book in my handbag and haul it out if it looked like he would be a while. You take people as they are and react accordingly, enjoy the company for what it is and as long as it lasts.

So, hmm, conclusion, levels of jealousy are directly relatable to depth of feeling. idea

.
Deedee, I'll leave that question to Krinka but can I ask one? Do you have, or did you ever have, a gap between your front teeth?

I haven't gone mad, I'll say why laugh
Biff.

Am uh oh moping blues
Your wonderfully weird ill give you that grin

But yes a very slight gap between my two front teeth...
@Biff. An intense love is not necessarily an overbearing love that holds you in captivity and forbids all enjoyment unless with your partner. JMO cheers
Biif, Yes I made a bit of a mess with that post and it happens sometimes...The blog you are referring to is going to be used for my daily message and it is closed for outside comments....It will contain my thoughts on society, the facts and the truth....My other blogs will be opened for comments and it would be good to see you comment on themhandshake
Deedee - it's one of those absolutely bizarre things which comes up more often than not - Libras, more than any other sign, are likely to have a slight gap between their front teeth. wow

Whether they were born in the north or south hemisphere, too, so it has nothing to do with being conceived in winter / summer. It absolutely fascinates me.

It certainly isn't across the board, my daughter is a Libra and hasn't got one, but 9 out of 10 times when I've met someone with even the slightest gap they've been a Libra. Go know. laugh

I don't know of any other physical clue to any other sign - except that many Leos will have longer than usual hair, and/or more of it. Of course the age group I'm cruising these days, I only know that when they show me the pics from the past.

And someone who looks at you straight to your backbone will usually be a Scorpio.

No other pointers. Pity, because it could be handy - plus show there is something more to astrology than most people will credit!

Thanks for answering, and I looked up your matches in case Krinka doesn't log in today - copied / pasted The most compatible signs with Libra are generally considered to be Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius. The least compatible signs with Libra are generally considered to be Cancer and Capricorn.

So at least you know to look out for guys with manes of good hair grin
On your scenario - I wouldn't worry with himself. If he wouldn't mention it himself, I probably would ask him who it was. I have to give out business cards to colleagues on a regular basis (work only) - I would assume it would be a business thing. He has never given me any reason to be jealous and I trust him. I do not want to be with someone where I would worry where he is and what he is up to. conversing
Evil - comes down to the individual. If anyone I feel intense about is more comfortable in the company of others, then we aren't a match and can only ever be friends. I yam what I yam.

Also partly the reason my default state is single because all that intensity is exhausting laugh
Lee, yup, see you on one of your commentable blogs soon if I can think of something to say that isn't just me talking for the sake of talking

Like I would EVER do that

roll eyes

laugh
To all you highly evolved people that don't ever get jealous/envious , then feel good about being highly evolved creatures.

Also, Bless your delusional little hearts.

Personally I find myself boiling with envy about 20 times a day.
KN, being with someone you couldn't trust would be a kind of horrible

I do think you've got a keeper of note - and so has he hug
STILL!! yay

You do not visit often enough. Pull up a chair. Coffee? Tea? a dram?

I miss you. Who keeps you away from here? I hate her already! very mad
Biff.

Thanks for the effort u put into that.
Appreciate it

I never knew that about the tooth gap.
Facinating indeed.
The only thing ive heard about people with front teeth tooth gaps is apparently they are great singers.
Lordy but i cant sing...

Thats slightly unnerving..had two very long relationships in my life, one with a Cancer and the other a Capricorn....both started great..but ended in disaster.

Theres something to this astrology thing after all

Thanks, Biff
Hey Eleg handshake

Great to see you're doing well, and in sunnier climes too.

Oh I was just away for a few months committing certain deeds, but now I'm back, as I missed the unconditional love and tolerance of the Blogs laugh
Dee, okay that's even weirder laugh

Even twins can be entirely different types but still, odd patterns can develop. Right now I have Pisces, Aries and Leo friends so no patterns there whatsoever. dunno

Oh and a Taurus needler to banter with on blogs laugh
Stillnot, the blogs missed you too. I can speak for them in this matter. snooty

Well mine definitely did. There are some people whose comments are always worth reading because they are often off the path most travelled and you are in that lovely select group and I am very pleased indeed to see you, don't know if I mentioned laugh
@Elegsabiff

So, we came to the conclusion that the intensity (or even the appearance itself) of jealousy depends on the intensity of our feelings for someone and that some people are naturally more emotionally intense than others. smile

Also some people seem more interested in emotions than others. smile

Here's something interesting I found about Scorpio-Aquarius relationships while researching the subject. laugh

Maybe being with someone who is 'emotionally different' isn't that bad, after all. smile

@Deedee

I don't know much about astrology, really. I was always simply interested in learning something more about ME and some people that interested me at the time. I never choose friends or partners according to an astrology sign. I just noticed some 'coincidences'. smile

Cally77 from Astrology thread is much more knowledgeable than me and Let_Us also knows pretty much, especially about Libras, since he's a double Libra himself. I've had some female Libra friends and we always got along very well, but I was never in love with a Libra man, so I never made a research about them. laugh
Awww shucks thanks Eleg.

I always enjoy your turn of phrase too. I'll be sure to bob back on more often.

Loverly pic of you by the way love
Welcome back, Doc cheers

You sound like you don't go around singing the John Lennon song ' I'm not a jealous guy' too often laugh
Krinka.

Thanks.
He knows i mean no harm by this but if i ask Let he may shut down CS with ink shortage problems laugh

Thanks Biff and Krinks for the messages.

hug
