Looking at faces – making choices

It’s weird isn’t it? Looking at all these faces and wondering which one’s you should contact and which ones you won’t.

How is it, we can make such choices and can we be sure we will be absolutely right? Of course, we can’t but something within us dictates our preferences. Is it that the person we choose will share some physical features with our own, or is it that we have an idea of aesthetic beauty and decide from there? Do we see the face and wonder if the one looking out will like what he or she sees in us? Do we wonder if the person looks like a friendly mother or father figure, or a self-obsessed independent career minded type? What’s more, does the face really reveal the character within and do we overlook truly wonderful people just because of their looks?

Maybe there should be a blind date website, where you only choose the person by what they say about themselves – no pictures to distract you. Now, that would be something wouldn’t it – you fall in love with the words and ideas of another, only to find out he or she would be one you would never choose, if your first judgement was by looks alone. Could you still love them?

I tend to avoid redheads - a sort of tribal instinct dating back to when we were probably either related or members of rival clans. However I'd have coffee with Miclee (here on the blogs) in a heartbeat because he's fabulously goofy.

The problem with browsing faces on a dating website is that most of the photos are, to put it at its kindest, flattering. My own is a classic example. grin

The trick is to put up a photo engaging enough to get someone to read your profile - but for those not triggered by looks / age it is the profile which creates (or kills) interest - and the first couple of messages which press buttons. smitten

I looked at your profile (see, your blog worked) and see you are planning the Grand Tour, if you make it to the Costa Tropical in Spain do get in touch, I'm outside your age preferences roll eyes but we have enough in common, I think, to enjoy a cup of coffee and a blether.

I would prefer if there were no profile pics at all.
Somebody having a pic up only gives you an indication of what they might have looked like sometime in the last 40 years. If they are using their own pic at all that is.
Or even if they are using a relatively recent one, there is a good chance it is photoshopped.
I am not saying that is the case for all pics, but I would say a lot fit into above categories.
And those that do actually have real pics, often can't sell themselves that well as pics don't always show the person in their best light.
Therefore, without a pic, you can concentrate on people's words and way of thinking.
When/if you do get to trust the person, then you can exchange recent pics or just meet instead. If they are not who they claim to be, they are going to be the losers as they have messed up on a potentially great relationship.
I agree with Molly
@Bunyi888

I couldn't agree more. smile

I used to be a member of the forums in the past, where we used avatars only. I didn't exchange photos with some members prior to meeting them in person and was always pleasantly surprised. smile

I often thought of removing my profile photo, but I don't like the idea of having a blank profile. I hope they will allow using avatars in the future on CS. smile
Yes I agreed with Molly but in saying that it's very easy to find out
whether a pic has been photo shopped or not.
Merc, you have agreed with me twice now...I'm scared laugh
We'll both buy lottery tickets so. Whoever wins pays for the drinks cheers
I like that cheers

Well like I posted the other day why are people allowed to have faceless silhouette pics yet I'm pulled up about my real bloody pics?

Doesn't make any bloody sense to me hug
I reiterate....

All my pics have been photoshopped heavily and I’m not ashamed of my actions snooty

I agree.
Its a kind of pick and choose rule system here.
Where ive seen a certain poster on the forums have his threads removed as quick as anything...even though they didnt violate rules....only because a moderator who is a regular forum poster...is obvs a good friend of his..
Its a joke
Forums I'm affiliated with the mods don't post nor mingle with members.

Where's that theory come from if I may? Pretty certain most folk don't put up old pictures of themselves. Biff for instance. If she looked like her picture 20 years then I reckon she's dead by now. laugh

Deedee ~ 'Wasn't looking for sympathy but thought it relevant to looking at faces. Thanks a lot for your good wishes. Much appreciated x
Galdrad...exactly my thinking.wink

"Shallow" being the operative word here...As I'm in no way superficial .

Looks fade away with age ...but intelligence and wisdom only gets stronger as we get older.
Well, Daniela, what you are saying is very untrue. With age, everything goes downhill. Intelligence and looks. The older you get, the more experience you accumulate alright but that certainly ain't intelligence. Wisdom perhaps. It takes me 5 times as long to learn something than it used to 5 years ago; I kid you not!

As for looks, I shalt never believe this. Do you really want me to believe that shgging a train wreck is the same as shgging a beauty? I don't understand. I think we aren't being entirely honest here. Nein. I don't think so.

Hi Elegsabiff,
Yes, I intend to head south for the winter and to have a coffee and a chat would be very good.
Cheers!
Benny ...I think I'd better warn you..if you go and see Ms Biff..you should take some tools and working clothes as you might have to work for your coffee. laugh
I love the surprise element..they can blog but have to wait. Then voila their photos, all 8!! Every picture a story, not just the obligatory profile info.

It is great! People aren't phony, they are genuine.Vlogs too, their voices.
