Did the Pope commit Rank Heresy ?

"Pope Declares No Hell?"

So ran the riveting headline on the Drudge Report of Holy Thursday.

Drudge quoted this exchange, published in La Repubblica, between Pope Francis and his atheist friend, journalist Eugenio Scalfari.

Scalfari: "What about bad souls? Where are they punished?"

Bad souls "are not punished," Pope Francis is quoted, "those who do not repent and cannot therefore be forgiven disappear. There is no hell, there is the disappearance of sinful souls."

On the first Holy Thursday, Judas betrayed Christ. And of Judas the Lord said, "Woe to that man by whom the Son of Man shall be betrayed; it were better for him if that man had never been born."

Did the soul of Judas, and those of the monstrous evildoers of history, "just fade away," as General MacArthur said of old soldiers? If there is no hell, is not the greatest deterrent to the worst of sins removed?

What did Christ die on the cross to save us from?

If Francis made such a statement, it would be rank heresy.

Had the pope been speaking ex cathedra, as the vicar of Christ on earth, he would be contradicting 2,000 years of Catholic doctrine, rooted in the teachings of Christ himself. He would be calling into question papal infallibility, as defined in 1870 by the Vatican Council of Pius IX.

Questions would arise as to whether Francis is a true pope.

I don't really get how anyone could be disappointed at the thought of there being no such place as Hell. cheering
Rejoice, seaworthy, for you are not going to burn, after all.
And sincere you are The ANTI. ,you are probably disappointed Harbal.laugh
Great Deceiver.comfort
Now Harb, why did I know you you were going to be here right up behind me....
talking of slippers, unless your looking for the feel of one at the back of the head, I suggest you skip back on over to your devilish blog... THE ideal blog where you belong roll eyes
You're right, itchy, I'm spreading myself very thinly these days. My fight against the forces of ignorance and stupidity is becoming a full time job. I will, however, keep popping by to make sure you're not up to no good.
sir bobby
I agree with Itchy, that Pope Francis is the most honest of all popes. I agree with Harbal, that anyone being upset at there being no hell, is very odd. laugh It's great to see a pope with some common sense. Christ never said he was god. He stated that he was the son of god. Like most people in his time he believed in a god and likely believed that we ALL are children of a god. Not in the biological sense, but a product of a god. Of course, nowadays we better understand the workings of the universe (however far from completely) and as Stephen Hawkins stated ~ Gods are superfluous.

One should consider searching within ourselves for one's own personal meaning, rather than relying on archaic doctrine based on archaic ignorant beliefs.

On the actual age of the earth versus biblical time & more;

Itchy, disappointed as I am at your refusal to be taken into custody, my dismay is tempered in no small amount by your obvious contempt for the bone head that thinks his unwarranted smugness will endear him to the big Daddy upstairs. You are right about Mary Magdalene, recent research has more or less established that she, in fact, worked in customer services. Although it hasn't yet been determined who the customers were or the nature of the services, I image travel or finance, that type of thing.
very mad Harbal !
Do not Sully my Mary's.
It is historically correct.
They are fine examples of an earthly woman's brave roles in life:
Mother,Sister and Partner( spouse)

Patience is wearing thin,...rolling on the floor laughing
Brother Harbal
Come, come, ashlander, it was all a very long time ago, who knows and who cares?

BTW, my patience isn't wearing thin.
You're correct Mr Worthy nowhere in the bible it is written she was...
I suppose this means no Easter eggs for me sad

Anyhow since it was never written how or why then did Pope Gregory portray her as being one?
Ms itchywitch, just arrived on my tweeter feed....

If Lent brought you closer to God don't drift away. Let St Mary Magdalene teach you how to love Jesus. This book may very well change your life.
* Itchywitch there is an hour long video about the book.yay
20clock pm here I think you will like the link.wave
I don't agree with many of Pope Francis s statements.
Judas had to do what he did, the time was right, he 'handed over' Jesus in order that he may do what he was sent to do ~ die for sinners.
G'evening Mr string wave
I read much and study quiet a lot about MM here on the net, but thanks all the same for sending me on the link handshake but the seven demon's, for the life of me I just can't figure whats that all about confused dunno

I've promised my daughter I'm taking a break from holy people for awhile ...
shes beginning to worry I've become a little too obsessed with it all uh oh
and maybe I have... but if you could perhaps quickly explain this seven demon thing to me, I could then run a long and work on keeping my promise to my daughter innocent
@Itchy
you have heard of a person being possessed by the devil or demons, she was possessed with seven. so that is a lot. can't imagine that. so I suppose she appeared crazy to people of that time period. jesus felt her pain so drove out the demons. and became a follower of Jesus.
Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city and village, preaching and bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him, 2 and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities—Mary called Magdalene, out of whom had come seven demons, 3 and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others who provided for Him from their substance. Luke 8
you don't know.
where are the days that infants that weren't baptized had to spend their time in hell?
maybe Francis doesn't see proof or need of hell.
Maybe he realised that organizing a world society on punishment isn't helping things forward
We travel the same path Mr String hug
view it differently as we go but that's alright.

Am very happy to see Pope Francis Christened Mary Magdalene THE APOSTLE OF APOSTLES... Up till now we've always believed it was Peter chosen by Jesus... or so the Bible would have us believe.
