On Being Human....

What is a human being? The online dictionary defines it as the fact of existing or conscious mortal existence. Hmm... do animals have conscious mortal existence?

If all it means is existence, then why do we seek meaning to our lives? If conscious mortal existence means only that we're conscious of our mortality, then why do we seek the answers to our existence? If we are meant simply to exist, then shouldn't however we exist be enough? What would it matter if we felt happy, sad, glad, angry, fearful, joy, frustration, etc., if we were meant to merely exist.

What would our lives be without feelings? Our lives would be an existence. It's our thoughts that determine whatever feelings we have about anything. We have thousands of thoughts every day, most of which don't even register because we don't assign any feelings to them. But it's how we feel about something/anything that determines how we act/react. Without feelings we would truly only exist.

In my opinion, it's that consciousness of feeling that gives us our humanity. And the more conscious and aware of how we are part and parcel of the entire universe, the more compassionate and the more empathetic we become. The more love we feel, the more love we have/need to share.

Every single person is made with blood, bones, muscle, etc, and it takes the same kind of energy for their hearts to beat, as it does ours. Peel off the skin, and you have the same kinds of cells that it takes to make ourselves as it does every other person.

It takes food to nourish them, and water to hydrate them, just like us. They hurt, cry, laugh, and love, just like we do. They need food, shelter, clothing and fresh water, just like we do. And they want more than to just exist, just like we do. They want to be loved and be happy, just like we do.

We're not defined as human buyings, conscious only of making more money than our neighbors, and buying more. We're not defined as human doings - being busy doing things to avoid feeling too much, or afraid that we won't feel enough.

We are defined as human beings. And a mother across the world is no less a human being than any mother here. A family is still a family. They rejoice at births and grieve at deaths and losses, just like we do. And that's what makes us human beings. The capacity to feel compassion and empathy for another human. The ability to be conscious of someone else's plight and to want to ease their lives, in whatever way we can.

If we are meant to merely exist, then I don't think we'd have been given the capacity to be conscious of not just ourselves, but everyone else, or to feel anything.

We all have the capacity to be amazing, and to accomplish amazing and awesome things in this life. If we focus on and are conscious of what we can accomplish and the good feelings that brings, there is no telling what every single person here could achieve.

As human beings, we each have something priceless to contribute. Every single one of us. I will work harder at being more conscious of my own thoughts and feelings and being aware when someone is trying to pull me from that happy place within my mind. I will be more conscious of seeing the jewels in others, particularly those that do not agree with me.

And, I think, that's what being human is. grin

GG - Just a short reply this morning before I leave. Yes, it's true we can learn a lot from animals. My horse taught me so incredibly much, as can any animal. I'll write more later when I have time. grin
Imp ~ you have a horse ! Wow, wonderful, you really are blessed. Horses are terrific, how the sense so much about their riders, their owners, how healing they are with young children and adolescents with emotional problems /Autism etc., But you already know all that.

Looking forward to hearing. Enjoy your day. I may have this off tonight as a friend is coming over.
Catch you later.wave ps Don't start me on Cats. [my favourite animal of all ]
Lady, what i believe is not the desired belief. to be human is to be flawed. we are not intended to be perfect. how dull is that?
Palm - you can call me Imp. Yes, we are meant to be flawed, because it's like art, the beauty and uniqueness of it (and us) is in the imperfections. Is that dull? I don't think so, I'd think it'd be far more dull to be perfect or think we all had to be.
Imp, if a mold were the desired, the flawed would go at a premium. irony
Palm - yes, that is ironic. But who thinks we all should be molded? That would be pretty boring, in my opinion. Where would the creativity be? Creativity is usually derived from the imperfect and a quest to improve upon it. If everything and everyone was perfect, we wouldn't need inventions or advancement, and I believe, we'd stagnate.
i dread the day when everything is the same. the confinement will generate more discord. it is a matter of taste, perhaps. taste is influenced by outside forces. like everything else. blah blah i'm tired tonight. have deep thoughts on this though
Palm - do you really think everything will be the same? Throughout the ages any powers that be that have attempted uniformity have been overthrown. As long as humans are imperfect, there'll be the rebellious, the resistors, which is a positive, imo. I don't believe I will ever see conformity, and thank goodness for that!
fortunately, for us, conformity will never occur as long as we hold fast to ourselves. this requires the brushing off of media. and conforms. the success story is for the original survivor. i will think of a person that made it, against the odds. unique to our times, that achievement may not take place for decades.
Palm - it's interesting that you mention success - as that brings us to another question, what is success? Based on who's idea? One man I greatly admire is Nikola Tesla - what a superb inventor. Was he considered successful in our standards? No. But he was successful in his inventions.

Although there are people that have 'made' it, I'd be interested in who you view as successful that's gotten there despite the odds.
Other then maybe a few humans I haven't really seen too many people who really and truly act human beings. It's as if they are somehow from another world..giggle
I had a feeling the answer would be something along the lines of everyone’s a winner.

10-20% of the population lacks the cognitive ability to perform even the simplest role in modern society but yes we can all accomplish amazing and awesome things.
My opinion is that this more than human definition of human is a lot of pressure to put on people.

The fact is that people can, will and should be bad at times and not every person is talented or clever or brilliant. Far from it.
We need a little less positive vibes and high hopes and a little more paid taxes and roads built. And we need a few more engineers and fewer pet grooming entrepreneurs.

The history books will condemn the new age generation for having no meat on the bones and foundationless high talk will implode into its exact opposite - rat people from the sewers.
@ Ches. The history books are mostly fiction and will continue to be so. Facts are interpreted politically. The bible being a classic example as I have said elsewhere.

@ molly, absolutely girl, spot on.
CM - welcome back!

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. As I've got to get out of here early this morning, I'll come back and give a more in-depth answer later. grin
Bearwoman - that can be somewhat true, depending on what you focus on. There are really good people in the world, and all you have to do is look at the natural disasters to see how many people help. There are a lot of people that do good things on a daily basis, but are the unsung and unseen heroes. Why? Because our society focuses on drama and the negative, because that's what sells.
Chesney Christ - thanks for your comments. As I mentioned to CM - my time is limited this morning and I'll respond later. There are some things I disagree with in your comments, and some I can agree.
Mollybaby - while I don't disagree that we are arrogant and overthink our own importance, I disagree that we're not that great. We have the ability to be incredibly great, but we waste it on things that in the whole scheme of life, are unimportant.
