Beta reader needed

(Blog edited)

Ever considered beta-reading? Indie writers of romantic comedies, historical novels, SF, crime, whodunits, horror, fantasy, erotica, etc, are always looking for good beta readers grin

Beta readers are not usually paid to read, but if you do useful helpful feedback, word spreads and you will be flooded with requests and can start charging for your time. It’s never big money! It appeals more to those who like reading anyway, and like the idea of being able to feed back directly to the writer.

Volunteers are generally sent the first ten percent (by email in a PDF, Word document, or Kindle format, as agreed) of a book which has been written but not yet professionally edited. He or she reads the section and sends it back with the following notes
a) what they think it is about, and what is likely to happen (this tells the author whether the first 10% has properly set the stage, or not)
b) whether they would like to read on

There is no obligation to read on - good beta readers will get dozens of requests every year and rarely have time to request the rest of the book.

A beta reader is NOT an editor, they are not required to look for errors (although any obvious ones can be pointed out!) and they are absolutely NOT required to tell the writer how to change the book completely laugh it is what it is. A beta reader is a normal reader - but one who tells the writer what they think of what they are reading.

If the beta reader does want to read on, the rest of the book is sent in two or three chunks (like reading a serial) with the only difference being that after each chunk you tell the writer what you think so far, and what you expect (or would like) to happen. Ideally you would respond within 5 days of getting the chunk, usual turnaround is 2 or 3 days for shorter books.

You can stop at any time. It is much appreciated if you would say why, e.g. not enough detail, I’m getting confused, not enough is happening, too much is happening, too long-winded, too many errors, etc. You can see how this feedback would be essential.

First comment is about a specific beta reader request. grin

This is for the last in a series of whodunits in the traditional armchair detective style. Because it is a series the challenge, with every new book, is to reintroduce the characters for a new reader without boring the pants off those who follow the series so at least one new beta reader is needed every time.

Having said that, anyone who has read from the Lawns series (you know who you are, although only Red and Chrome ever posted public comments on my CS book list laugh ) would also be very welcome.

I don’t think this counts as advertising (neither selling nor offering money) but made it a separate comment so the mods could delete it if they disagree.
Looks like a good idea, it might even help the readers become novelists through the experience. cheers
It doesnt look like advertising, it looks like it's creating a market. idea
Keepers, they say everyone has a book in them, the trick lies in coaxing it out. roll eyes

There's a pretty big market for beta readers already but good beta readers, eish, hard to find. So many will just say 'yes very interesting' (or of course 'no thanks no more' laugh) and then there are some who want to rewrite the book to their fancy and should indeed go off and write their own instead rolling on the floor laughing
BTB, anyone interested in those other genres but not wanting to give me their email address roll eyes I can get email addresses for you instead. The better known an author is, the more they will only be interested in someone with beta reading experience already so you might not get a reply, don't shout at me if you don't. scold
Fabbydoodle Tilla, will mail you yay
I'm afraid my contract with Razzle magazine is water tight and I can't work for anyone else, sorrymoping
B, even for free, that's draconian rolling on the floor laughing
cool no worries although you definitely undersell yourself there laugh
Yeah I'd give it a go. 10 percent of a childrens book should be ok if I don't get too hammered beforehand.
Crest - thumbs up Novel - good pun. Intended? laugh

thumbs down does no-one in your life ever say what they mean, is there always a hidden agenda? comfort

I wonder, I wonder, if just possibly a new beta reader could be a gazillion times more valuable than two or three email addresses single people on a singles website have set up to get contacts from dodgy strangers? I believe the going rate is selling email addresses is something like 1c each.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Tough one.

flex

If anyone does know a buyer, I've collected a fair few from eligible men who unfortunately can't come onto CS very often so would prefer me to contact them direct. roll eyes
Okay, sign me up for whodunits and historical novels. What is SF?
Sure Imp, will pass the word on, ta. SF is science fiction transport and tends to be incredibly technical - another genre I tend not to beta read as my brain starts bending 3 pages in and finally collapses into a dying star in a galaxy far far away, no matter how frantically I engage the cyberfoil conduits and try to matrix the retroengineering I've just had upgraded.

And yet - love Dr Who. And am a trekkie. dunno
These days I can read short stuff. But I can't meet any deadlines. blues and no time to give serious feedbacks. sigh

Next time El. Sorry.bouquet
Two feedbacks so far, one positive, one not, but helpful. The other two obviously changed their minds about this whole beta reader thing dunno

A 50% response is actually about par for the course when recruiting new readers cool although I once had someone come back 5 months later with her feedback. Er, thanks, but the book's already published? roll eyes Luckily she wasn't suggesting any changes anyway.
